Guest
I was sorry to read in the latest excellent edition of 'Classic Speedway' of the death of Ian MacDonald. His obituary details his involvement with speedway, initially in the 1960s with 'Speedway Star' as their expert on Polish and Russian speedway. I first met Ian in early 1973 shortly after he became editor of the then newly founded 'Speedway Mail.' At that time I was at the start of what proved to be nearly 40 years with the 'South London Press'. While at a 1973 Wimbledon meeting top photographer Alf Weedon, who was a co-owner then at 'Speedway Mail', asked me if I would write a column for the 'Mail' recalling perhaps the late 1950s early 1960s when I had links with 'Speedway Star.' Through Alf Weedon I was then asked by Ian MacDonald and co-owner Bob Bolle to do sparetime shiftwork at the 'Mail' initially editing pages for the Press, but leading on to my also writing articles for them. I became good friends with Ian in the ensuing five years before he left for a job elsewhere in press publicity and I lost contact with him. It was with sadness that I read in the latest edition of 'Classic Speedway' (no.46 Autumn 2019) that Ian had passed away after a short illness. Coincidentally the then young man who succeeded Ian at 'Speedway Mail' all those years ago was Tony McDonald, now a much respected publisher in the speedway world.
