But why would it not apply to India also, it is part of the Commonwealth.

That's a subset of the Commonwealth and still represents 60 million people.

If "30 million Romanians and Bulgarians coming to Britain" were a Brexit issue, then how is 60 million (plus an additional 5 million from Hong Kong of course) not going to be?

And the fact remains there would have to be reciprocity, and those countries only want the 'brightest and best' from the UK... :D

Sadly, when it's all said and done, speedway makes no significant economic, social or cultural contribution to the UK and doesn't warrant any special treatment.

Even if that were true... Which other Australians that aren't currently either in or allowed to ride in this country would even be worth signing... Jacob Hook and James Pearson are probably the lowest quality but worthwhile Aussies, anyone lower is not ready...

Furthermore an increasing number of Australians are launching their European careers in Denmark and Poland - Kenyan Rew, Mathew Gilmore, Fraser Bowes

Losing the Shay was a massive blow not only to speedway but in the long run landlords Halifax FC also suffered. I'm convinced that had ways been worked out to keep speedway going at the Shay in the mid 80's then it would likely still be running there now cause that place was always well supported!

The shay was unique in that as well as being a super racetrack,it was five minutes walk from Halifax town centre,and a Saturday race night as well,so a complete night out for many.It also helped that in the early years,most of the team lived within 10 miles of the track,so a real sense of them being 'our ' team.

In fact this is a curious thing. Australia and some EU countries have much more relaxed visa conditions for 'working holidays' than the UK and Australia have.

Only other I can really think of is Jaimon Lidsey, most other 'older' Australians have already had stints over here... The likes of McGuinness are not good enough imo, unless the NL starts allowing Aussies etc

Lidsey has had a season here already.

It had everything going for it thats for sure and was a major part of the fabric of the Town!

 

The subsequent fortunes of speedway in West Yorkshire and Shay owners Halifax Town football club after the 1985 finish of speedway there gives a firm indication of how successful Halifax Dukes speedway was!

Too true...

Loved seeing riders learning to ride the Shay... and having pre & post beer in the 'Three Pigeons' is one of the greatest ticks on a shale lovers 'Bucket List'.

I visted both the Shay  & Odsal, in days before & after Hull's 1995 return, and enjoyed both.  As at Hull, Craven Park, the view from the main stand at Odsal was great but of the two I preferred The Shay though, reasons of smaller stadium so better atmos and in pre-2m safety barrier days (which must be said was defo needed at The Shay !) one could literally get more than up close and personal with the racing and great pits viewing too.  Racing was mostly brilliant at the Shay, unless it was a hot, dry day and then it got pretty slick, otherwise it was great.  Both sadly missed venues still, Odsal has a shale track once more so looking good for poss speedway return.....

Never got to see any racing at Halifax but called in many years later to view the stadium and with some imagination could visualise where the track once was?

I think it was in 1975 saw Charlie Monk win an open meeting with the prize being a brand new Weslake Engine ,he beat the very best of the old Gulf League that night .Loved going there  the shape and size  similar to Crewe actually  Paul O'neal ,Ian Cartwright and John Jackson rode for both teams a sometime or another .

I used to have chats with Ian when visiting "Mouseman of Kilburn." A very nice person and told some fascinating stories regarding his speedway career.
