Was there when Michael did not show up for his Golden Helmet encounter with Shawn Moran he did ride in the test match against the yanks Third Man in 1983.!!!

Would you believe, my first meeting was the Gauloises Pairs semi final in 1977,  and Michael got an 18 point maximum where nobody could get near him - his partner (Ian Turner) didn't arrive until the interval!!! For some reason, presumably the fact he lived over the road, even though he had gone to King's Lynn by then, Carl Glover was one of the track reserves - he could legitimately have been Michael's partner!

In all seriousness he generally rode the place quite well (apart from the British Semi Final in 1980 when he needed a win in his last heat to qualify, and he was up against his team mate the previously unbeaten Dave Jessup.... I don't need to tell you what happened ;)  ) - the Golden Helmet meeting Sidney mentions wasn't that long after the Eglese/Frank Ebdon controversies at KL and Ipswich, not that that excuses him really, but then it happened again in 1985 and 1986!

That Sheffield v Poole meeting must have been late on in the season, as we didn't sign John Davis until September of that year.

He also did not ride Halfax that much over the years, but the Golden Helmet you mentioned i remember going to Poole on the Wednesday and he had bike issues. that night in the two runs with Shawn. That caused him to not turn up for the second leg if i remember rightly Eric Boocock was not being a happy Larry about it.

Yes,your right TB,originally set for the 8th September but rained off.The restaging date was 7th October by that that we'd signed John Davis as you said and Shawn was back from his broken leg.Poole changed their entire riding order apart from Michael Lee at number one (looks like they brought Sudden Sam in for Erik Stenlund) causing no fewer than 38 changes to the race card during the meeting!
