comet49
in today's Times and Star a coucillor is quoted saying * No contracts signed with NHS or Sellafield * No high level contact with either, just an expression of interest ”insufficient guarantees upon which to base such “such a momentous decision”” That's why it was cancelled, didn't want to burden the tax payer. With nothing signed why did they wreck the track, counting chickens comes to mind. Edited July 19, 2019 by comet49

As for the rugby world cup, so what if they were aiming to stage matches there - what better way of showcasing a brand spanking new facility and at the same time showing that this part West Cumbria means business and is determined to move with the times. This will be a huge opportunity missed, and one that probably wont happen again. As for the speedway, the public had their opportunity last year to show what interest was still out there for the sport by turning up and supporting the best and most successful team in its history. Unfortunately only around 450 or so of us could be a**ed to do so. Who knows, if 1000+ had come through the gate maybe things could have been so different! Christ what happened to the other 750 that went in 2004/5? Used to look forward to my Saturday nights travelling from Carlisle to Worky speedway. Yeah Penky still going strong and hopefully for a while yet, can change a game with his tactical skills. All my teenage/adult life I've been a visitor to Derwent Park...both for Worky Town RL and the wonderful Comets. It is still heartbreaking to not have speedway there anymore, and seeing the track disappear is awful. But I know many Town RL folk and it is they who say something might be stirring speedway style in the vicinity.......can't say more but????
Neila
Had a walk down to Northside arena today, must be 100 wagon loads of shale from Derwent park dumped along the edge of the area, just need a track to put it on !!

Fortythirtyeight
Think it was time that we all accepted it. As painful as it is, Workington is no longer a speedway venue and I doubt it ever will be again. Speedway is no longer the attraction it once was and whilst it can still survive at several other venues around the country the sport will never be as popular as it was in the 70's / 80's and a few other tracks , unfortunetley , will go the same way as the beloved Comets very soon. lets just hope the whole sport doesn't disappear down the big hole the B.S.P.A. seem to be digging for it.
