This was all about the Rugby World Cup...pushing through a bloody daft idea in order to bring a few rugby matches to the area, sod the speedway...sod the football, lets manipulate everything to suit Workington Town, let's not worry about the long terrm implications to the tax payer. What Allerdale needs is an new stadium that is fit for purpose and is financiablly viable, that meets the needs of all the local sports, that will serve the needs of youth development and the community, that will bring new business to the town and surrounding areas, that will look beyond today and to the future...Allerdale isnt just Workington its a huge area of West Cumbria and the needs of the entire area need to be considered not just one club

Agree with all the above, and from what I understand that is exactly what the proposed stadium was aiming to deliver. As for the rugby world cup, so what if they were aiming to stage matches there - what better way of showcasing a brand spanking new facility and at the same time showing that this part West Cumbria means business and is determined to move with the times.

This will be a huge opportunity missed, and one that probably wont happen again.

As for the speedway, the public had their opportunity last year to show what interest was still out there for the sport by turning up and supporting the best and most successful team in its history. Unfortunately only around 450 or so of us could be a**ed to do so. Who knows, if 1000+ had come through the gate maybe things could have been so different!

The main issue with the 2021 World Cup bid is that it was secured before planning was even approved for the stadium they were going to hold it in therefore inflating the costs considerably by having to build it much quicker than necessary. I have no issue with World Cup matches being held in the area but this was all done ar*se about face !

Yes lets give the 2 s***holes a lick of paint each, and Bobs your uncle this part of West Cumbria can remain steadfastly in the 19th Century.

Why would Workington want or need  a state of the art multi function community stadium making use of historically low interest rates and interested prospective partners, when they already have the delights of BP and DP............

Absolutely pathetic, backward thinking idiots, and that is not just aimed at the lily livered excuse for councillors who have voted this down.

Don't be so ridiculous , an 8000 capacity Stadium stuck in the middle of Workington , getting an average of 500 fans if you're lucky will benefit the Town in what way , clever ar*se ?

Complete waste of money  and the Councillors agree !!!

A smaller new Stadium to benefit the sports in the Town a much more realistic idea

Derwent Park also had a lot of money spent on it for the last World Cup matches they hosted, the visiting teams were horrified by the poor facilities and that was AFTER it had been given its 'lick of paint' etc, the council cant keep polishing a turd because there is no way that the World Cup will come to the area in the current stadia. The original plans were over the top but we need a decent new stadium plan that suits our area needs and will bring additional events and opportunities to the area, sadly neither Derwent Park or Borough Park can do that

Is that with 2 r's or 2 s's? .......I guess I have just joined the club containing manse, nagy1 et al who have been Taylorj'd!

2 quotes from completely unrelated forums which I could not better:

'This was a clever way of financing something which would act as a catalyst for regeneration, community and sport generally'.

'The councillors who voted against this should hang their heads in shame. It would've been something positive for the town and crowds would've risen for both sports once it was built as most clubs throughout the land have done.'

The councillors who voted against the stadium havent been in office for more than 5 minutes but they were duly elected by the people who wanted change, which those councillors promised to deliver and the new stadium plans were top of their agenda. I personally am in support of the new stadium, we have to look to the future but it has to be paid for and the cost was a major concern to a large part of the electorate, candidates in the elections made sure they got their votes by telling the voters they would stop the stadium plans.

There will be a new stadium but not as quickly or as costly as first planned I guess with that in mind there would also be the opportunity for speedway supporters to attend any public consultations and ask pertinent questions reagrding the speeedway being included in the new plans, perhaps if enough people show interest they might review the idea of including a speedway track in the revised stadium plans.

In the meantime the track has been ripped up at Derwent Park, the Reds dont want to play now and are adamant they will stay at Borough Park and Town will have lost the World Cup...what a shambles !

Shambles indeed. You would not think that a council could alienate so many people in such a short space of time - football , rugby and speedway fans alike, however they seem to have managed it. Well done!

I can't wait to see what their Plan B entails, when (and where) it is going to be delivered .........and how much smaller can a new stadium be?

Following the events of recent days, the directors wish to confirm our intentions regarding our home for the 2019-20 season.

Immediately after Friday’s decision by Allerdale Borough Council not to proceed with the new stadium in its current form, we stated that it is our intention to remain at Borough Park for the immediate future. The position remains unchanged.

Much work has been done behind the scenes to establish what actions are required to ensure Borough Park is a safe and viable place to play and watch football next season, and the Board has put in place an action plan to see the necessary works carried out throughout July and into August.

Those works have an anticipated total cost in the region of £15,000, which the club will need to find in the near future.

The spending outlined here is intended to ensure we can continue to play at Borough Park for the next twelve months, during which time we expect to see progress made on the longer term plan.

The Board will be working closely with contractors to minimise the cost of the essential works and will be looking to secure additional income to protect the playing budget for the forthcoming season.

Meanwhile, positive talks were held with ABC and Workington Town on Monday and it is clear there is a determination and commitment from all parties to see sporting facilities improved in Workington.

Nothing by the look of it. Disgraceful.

Yes completely. Massive backfire on their part.
