Yeah, I was there for Christer's debut in 1970, when he scored 7 points in the main body of the team (which wasn't too strong). He maintained that form all year, and ended with a near 8-point average. His worst season was his last, at Hackney, and still averaged over 7 1/2.

Steve

So was i, two race wins from memory. My first ever meeting at West Ham, 39-39 draw against Wimbledon.

Yup, and Sverre broke his arm when Peter Murray took him off right in front of us...

Funny, I saw on another thread where you said you were at the Lokeren Memorial Meeting, and I was there too! There was something special about Custom House (including the breeze coming off the river), and I do miss the place.

Okay, in view of the distinctions stated, here are my three teams :

All-Time

Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs, Ronnie Moore

Vic Huxley, Vic Duggan

This is where it gets tough, but I will plump for Tommy Jansson and Split Waterman.

At Their Peak

Barry Briggs, Ronnie Moore, Vic Huxley

Olle Nygren, Geoff Mardon

Ron How, Tommy Jansson

Those I Saw (for the Dons)

Ronnie Moore, Barry Briggs, Olle Nygren

Trevor Hedge, Tommy Jansson

Edward Jancarz, Roger Johns (not as consistent as some of the others, but he put in some incredible rides).

So do i. I was lucky enough to attend 17 meetings at Custom House between 1970-72. I pleaded with my old man for two weeks to take me to the last ever, in the end he gave in and we went.

The problem I have with this is, do you mean when they were actually riding for the club, or over their whole career? My best example of this would be Split Waterman. If it was over his whole career he would certainly make my New Cross team, but if we are just talking about the period he was actually at New Cross, probably not.

I think it has to be for the club.

But it would be a bit daft for e.g. an Oxford fan to pick Tony Rickardsson, just because he did a handful of appearances for the club.  I'm sticking with what they've done for the club.

That was the question as to how Simmo and Banger get picked for West Ham, when they performed much much better elsewhere

Definitely. Likewise a Swindon fan having Maciej Janowski or Jason Crump.

1. Barry Briggs

2. Leigh Adams

3. Phil Crump

4. Jason Doyle

5. Martin Ashby

Reserves!

Jimmy Nilsen and Bob Kilby

I was mulling including Leigh Adams of Greg Hancock for Oxford.  But, at the end of day, Todd Wiltshire rode for six seasons with Oxford, rather than two or three, and god knows what would have happened he had not come out of retirement in 2006.  I don't think we'd have lasted that season.  Todd was a loyal servant to Oxford - there was also the time he missed GP practice to ride for the club.

The only "short term" Oxford rider I included was Ron How.  But he was No 1 of a treble-winning-side in 1964 and the club's first World Finalist that same season.

He never even crossed my mind (although I had left Oxford by then) but wouldn't have come any where near being included in a list of mine.

To be fair, Jason Crump was a brilliant number one for Swindon, who practically saved them following their relegation, so could, perhaps, justify inclusion. But it was only for one season and in the lower league, so not for me. Janowski never looked like a world class prospect until leaving Blunsdon though.

The last time I went to Oxford was when he was in the team, but pulled out of the meeting beforehand for some reason !!!

From memory Leigh Adams guested instead

Tony Rickardsson got booted out of the team two weeks early and was replaced by Todd Wiltshire.  The first meeting with Todd was a home win over Coventry, with the team spirit completely transformed.  To be fair, I think Rickardsson had already lost interest in speedway – with hindsight, he should have retired on top of the podium in 2005.

I have to say that I was never a fan of Rickardsson.
