chunky
...but it nearly is... Thanks to that splendid comment yesterday in response to gustix posting different names in a thread about the same names, it gave me an idea! In addition to the names posted by Mr. Hyam, let's see what other "nearly identical" names (one letter different) we can come up with. Bob / Rob Jones (Swindon / Wimbledon) Kevin Brice / Price (Canterbury / Exeter) Ron Johnson / Johnston (New Cross / Belle Vue) Andy Fines / Hines (Rye House / Peterborough) Steve Naylor / Taylor (Crayford / Ellesmere Port) Ole / Ove Olsen (Coventry / Birmingham) Mark Ferry / Terry (Stoke / Hackney) Garry Hay / May (West Ham / Weymouth) Steve

Yeah, he's only represented GB in the under-21 SWC, and was runner-up in the British Under-21 Championship, so he's not that well-known. Oh, and a British grass-track champion... Oh, and a British grass-track champion... Sreve I didn't know there was a British Under-21 Championship or an under-21 SWC! And I do not follow results in regard to British grass track racing either. Steve Probably an interest he should take much further. p.s. Finding 2 riders with names with just one letter difference is proving much harder than finding riders with the same name. WalterPlinge
As well as the more well known Mike Spink of the late 70s and 80s, there was also Mike Spinks who rode for Boston, Crayford and Peterborough

This is an extract from an article by my old friend the esteemed John Chaplin in regard to Wally Hull's speedway career. John Chaplin wrote: "Walter (Wally) Hull, a distinguished Belle Vue Ace of yesteryear who first took to the track in 1928 at the famous meeting on the Audenshaw trotting circuit just outside Manchester which was staged a mere three weeks after High Beech. "When things really got going, he graced several pre-war London teams including Wimbledon, Lea Bridge and Hackney Wick, besides Sheffield, and was a member of the England side which defeated Australia 56-39 in the second Test of the historic first series in 1930. "There was another tilt at the Antipodeans in the fourth Test, again at Belle Vue, which ran out another England win at 51-45. "Wally played a significant part in the dominant Belle Vue steamroller that monopolised most of the club honours in the mid-30s right up to the war. He didn’t ride again immediately after the war when league racing returned in 1946 but made a comeback in 1947, once again in Aces colours, helping them win the National Trophy for the seventh time. Two years later, he became team manager at Sheffield, then promoted by Alice Hart. "He has been described as tall and gentlemanly."
