Both NBJ (Berwick) and Wells (Edinburgh) have 2 more meetings before Thursday's Poole v Ipswich meeting.  So maybe we'll be able to better judge both their consistency and return to fitness?

Somerset are also due to race Wednesday so will Nico also be back?

If Nico is back great otherwise i would use Wells again.

That is good news for the future but they have to establish themselves in the lower leagues first and it showed the gulf when Bickley guested for Belle Vue recently. Bickley is a terrific prospect but i said before the meeting it was too early in his development to ride in the top division.

There are some great kids coming thru. Both Thompson twins, Leon Flint, Kemp, the Mcgurks, Jordan Palin to name a few. Think only Flint is 16. So yes a huge step up for them in next year or 2. IF it does go to one big league next year I hope they keep minimum one youngster at reserve for all teams.

For their progression I’d like to see number 7s in the top flight all youngsters. And heat 8 protected as well, that way they get 2 races with their opposite number.

Bring back the 2 point minimum average for top flight and include the kids at 7.

We can all see how the Poles push their next generation. Guaranteed to stay at reserve as well. The only way clubs will invest in youth. The better clubs will cream the best kids but you only have to look at the best Polish teams who have 2 power packed reserves.

The richest clubs will pay for the best kids, which is fine in my books If it means we put in a structure for the future.

And not simply for a year quick fix.

For the majority of the kids even the CL is a jump too far and having a 2 point rider will mean teams are basically 6 a side.

They get the sack and disillusionment sets in so there must be a lower league standard for them to learn and progress.

These young riders shouldn’t be used just so teams can build a better top heavy team and the bspa have a duty of care to see to it.

At least the 2nd tier has it right now by having to use 2 pointers at reserve and I agree the correct pathway should be Development >NL>2nd tier>top tier.

But once an rider has had 2nd tier experience it’s time to blood them higher up. This is natural progress and this is how Poland have dominated for years now.

The likes of Drabik, Smektala, Kubera etc didn’t just become good riders it was because of the training and tier structure. Ditto Zmarzlik, Piotr Pawlicki etc before them.

The sooner the BSPA take a radical step and introduce a tiered structure the better but I doubt it will happen as the plan seems to be plan it, bin it, try something , bin that too.

What team GB at under 21 level is the right approach.

But these lads, apart from Lambert need to be able to enjoy their riding and not shoehorned into sides to make the numbers fit.

Poland is a world away from the UK and we need to keep it in perspective.

Denmark and Sweden have long encouraged young riders but both are now struggling especially Sweden who are dangerously struggling for talent.

The reason as you stated why the jump can be too far is because the diversity within CL teams. There are PL standard heat leaders going to the line with riders who have just made the step up. There needs to be a closer level across all leagues, put 2 teams of riders out where the averages don't have such a wide variance and the unpredictable racing results will come. If this means that the CL has to follow suit to the NL where the standard of doubling up rider is curtailed then so be it.

Should be two UK under 21 riders at reserve in the top tier from next season onwards . The draft system before was a great little system.

Agree. We all thought it was a joke in that first year but the standard improved and it was a success in the end. Hopefully they see sense and bring it back but won't hold my breath.

Should never, ever have been done away with. It certainly was worth it. Couldn’t understand it being binned.

I suspect 5 teams saw the opportunity to get in a ringer or 2 at reserve the next season so voted it out. Long term planning was never their thing.

It was binned because as per usual it was fiddled by certain clubs & the man in charge of it gave the riders wrong positions in the draft so miraculously they could end up at those certain clubs.

The best decision ever to stop it as it was another good idea corrupted as usual.

Although grateful for the effort Ricky Wells has put in for us, i hope everything goes well for Nico on Wednesday so he can return to the Pirates thursday, NBJ looked ok tonight too without catching the eye, hopefully we can have almost a full team again. Richie does need replacing but no idea who with.
