Not necessarily, position 2 is no gimme - you're partnered by your own #1 in 3 races and in Swindon's case that's one of the best riders in the world, whilst the opposition you face is similar whether you line up at 2/3 or 4. waytogo28 Posted January 12, 2019 Report Share Posted January 12, 2019 Marking out the new track shape is significant progress by UK speedway standards. It's barely 2019 and if the season doesn't need to begin until May, why worry? I am sure the promotion has it all in hand, even if a burst of severe winter weather should crop up and delay the work. Surely, the land and stadium owners can just play the long game now, as long as the developers have sold enough houses to satisfy their shareholders for the time being. Is the local council under pressure from Central government to build more homes in the area? - it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. If the council does pass a requirement for the developer to carry out the work on the stadium ( track included) until further houses can be built, could the landowners & developers then decide to just take their own sweet time and focus their efforts on other projects ( not in Swindon) and hinder the council's hitting their targets? The land also includes offices formerly occupied by Vygon, as well as a carvery. The site was previously earmarked for expansion by Morotola and then by Vygon, before being demolished to slab level in 2010. Vygon currently occupy part of the former Motorola site, which also starred in the James Bond film The World is not Enough as a Turkish oil platform, having moved in in 2011. If approved by Swindon Borough Council, the 16.1-acre site would be developed with 111 market homes, 36 social homes and 12 intermediate homes. The application's design and access statement reads: "To the north-west of the site is the Abbey Greyhound Stadium - recent residential development is underway on sites around the stadium. "The nearest residential development is adjacent to the west of the site and is accessed off Salzgitter Drive. To the south of the site is the Vygon light industrial site with a mix of other uses to the south-east including a restaurant/pub, gym/sports centre, office space and an existing and emerging retail park. "The proposals for this site will therefore be central to these changes and will help to create a new and vibrant neighbourhood. "The most dominate feature in the vicinity is the adjacent Vygon building - a leading supplier of medical and surgical disposables. This is a light grey clad warehouse building, set back from the site boundary, with a distinctive horizontal ‘tube’ projecting from the main building. "Whilst the plan demonstrates one potential way of developing the site, it is for illustrative purposes and shows how the quantum of development described in this statement can be accommodated on the site."
