Ronnie Moore seriously ill

VERY sad news from New Zealand, where former double World Champion Ronnie Moore has been diagnosed with incurable lung cancer after seeing specialists in his home city of Christchurch.

 

The Wimbledon legend, 85, recently spent three days in hospital and is now set to undergo radiotherapy treatment to ease his breathing, although not cure his terminal illness.

 

Obviously, our thoughts go out to Ronnie - probably the most popular World Champion ever - and his family at this very difficult time.

Very sorry to hear this news. Ronnie was one of my favourite riders when I first started watching speedway, though this was late in his career he still had the ability to impress. All good wishes to him.

Very sorry to hear this. Always figures in anyone's list of the all-time greats and probably could have won even more individual titles if he hadn't been such a committed team rider. Probably, in that respect, he actually was the greatest ever.

That's really very sad news, he was always immaculate whenever he visited Brandon, a top man in every sense of the word, thanks for the memories.

What sad news. Ronnie was one of my first speedway heroes when I was a kid in the late 1960's. He was was still a top rider when he retired from British racing.

Very sad news. One of the genuine all time greats. Beautiful style and I have to agree with the poster who said he was one of, if not THE, greatest ever team rider.

So sad to hear, especially after we lost fellow Great Ivan Mauger so recently.

I saw him ride in my first ever meeting at Belle Vue in 1970  when he was lading Wimbledon in the Cup Final. Even then I could recognise that he was truly great.

This is such sad news to hear of Ronnie Moore's passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and many friends who will miss him dearly. Such a very sad day for his family, his many friends and speedway 

Although I never got to see Ronnie ride with my own eyes, but what I have seen of him riding on film showed me that he was a true legend of speedway not just for New Zealand, Australia and of course my own team Wimbledon. The memories of those who witnessed him riding I'm sure will last forever.

Sad news, was very lucky to see him several times in his late sixties comeback mostly at plough lane due to relatives living in London. 

 Became a real favourite of mine. A true legend. 

such a pleasure to watch, appeared to be a inspiration for his team.

I'm lucky enough to have watched Ronnie race on many occasions. He was the greatest all round rider and team player and his track craft and skill was amazing to watch. Watching him going from last to first against quality opposition was a joy to watch.

In my opinion he was the best.

So sad to loose one of the greats. I remember him as part of the "fabulous five" - Moore, Craven, Briggs, Knutsson, and Fundin in the early 60's - they started of 30 yards as they were so good. 

I missed him at his probable best in the mid-late fifties, but yes, something special to watch when I did see him.

Just seen this topic and so sad to read of Ronnie Moore's passing.

I saw him ride many times and remember him as one of the most stylish riders I have ever seen. His team riding was legendary and of course he was a twice world champion.

I saw Ronnie numerous times being a Wimbledon supporter. Ronnie seemed to be able to hug the white line better than any other rider, making it very difficult to pass him. He seemed to be glued to that white line. I also remember he seemed to always have a bright white scarf when he rode. I was at Wembley in 1959 when Ronnie won the World Championship beating Fundin and Briggs.
