Well I read what Torben had to say ...

1) Cardiff would be more attractive nearer the business end of the Championship where the meeting could be more 'vital' in the title race

2) moving away from the 'holiday season' will allow more fans to attend and this would be specifically the case for 'locals'

3) the later date should have a 'positive effect' on accommodation price.

I cannot help being sceptical about his words though ....

I have never heard anyone say they avoided attending Cardiff due to it being too early in the title chase but would suddenly do so if it were only 'more vital'.

Most Cardiffs have been last week June to second week July which is generally not holiday season for most people.

Goodness know why 'local' Cardiff folk would suddenly start attending in September when they have studiously avoided doing so for 18 years before .

And I fully expect that the hotels will screw everyone in September just the same as July, especially as the Uni accommodation may be unavailable as well.

I presume the Stadium is just not being offered to them any earlier than September for other reasons and he is just spinning it the best way he can.

PS

I am fine with September ... Just a little less BS from BSI would be nice.

I read the reasons in Speedway Star and I'm on the same page as you  "what rubbish" More locals will go, "really" accommodation more affordable "can we have that in writing" We all know whenever there is an event on at Cardiff that hotel prices go through the roof, Sept 21 will be no different. The business end of the season might cost fans at another GP that has that slot , Cardiff has a solid plus 40 thousand fanbase, other GP's do not.The few more that you might get will be dwarfed by those lost to the football season and even T20 cricket finals day. If the stadium is unavailable in June / July next year  then there is no  problem with just  saying that. Personally I associate Cardiff with being a summer event.

Accomadation won't be cheaper whilst a well known travel company hoovers up hotel rooms only to then sell them on at a premium to poor fans.    These firms do a lot of good but this practise is awful.  In a perfect world they would be left every room unsold.

You miss the point completely.    Of course people go to the hotels direct but the travel companies (or maybe just one company), who know the date of the GP long before the general public mop up plenty of rooms in advance.  This is great for the hotel as they probably get the money up front or at least guarateed funds so they can relax.   Hotels then sell there remaining rooms quickly so it means the public are left with just the travel companies to work with.

Called a secondary market.  Same as Viagogo and StubHub    Companies who should all come under legislation to regulate

Good business while your allowed to get away with it.  Imagine renting a room (or buying a ticket) for £50 and then sell on for £75.   Easy money isn't it.

I'm from Newport but I've worked and socialised in Cardiff for most of my life. In my experience the 'locals' are barely aware that there is an event at the stadium on GP day. Those I worked with were rarely tempted to attend, the usual response being 'Whats that then, something to do with car racing?' There was more enthusiasm and interest in several monster truck events that have taken place there. I've said it many times before, if there's not a ball involved, South Walians are just not interested.

Sadly speedway has become unattractive, The facilities at Swindon are dreadful. The loos are a disgrace, the food dreadful, Stadium very tired. Track preparation all year has been iffy bends 1 and 2 like a dust storm.. The sun goes down right over bends 3 and four making viewing from start finish not great. I  am not picking on Swindon, many of our beloved sport"s tracks are no better.Hence the sport attracts "enthusiasts "who are prepared to put up with that. After all a lot of us are happy to stand in a muddy field watching grass track.

Then have a look at the riders available to watch, if you are an armchair fan, watching Grand Prix, then British speedway is a little like watching the third division in football. The big stars are not here. I have a mate who comes with us every year to Cardiff , wouldn't miss it, but league racing in the UK no longer appeals to him, his choice.

Just think if you were not an enthusiastic speedway fan, would you dream of taking a date to the Speedway, Don't think she would be too impressed.

Sorry but the society we live in these days has high expectations , and British Speedway just doesn't deliver on so many counts.

This is such a shame for the Sport I have loved for so many years!, I hate to watch it die!

The chips aren't that bad. Back straight bogs are a nightmare, home straight not too bad. And the coiderr ain't bad, and we've had Sun this year. Most races are over by the second bend lap 1.

Zummerzet has far better racing, and you are looking down onto the track rather than through fences and a dog track.

Well the later date works better for me, will be attending my first Cardiff GP with my son.

The start time is now saying 2pm local time - is this confirmed? Was hoping for 5pm or later as it's a long trek from the North East.

EDIT - Confirmed as a 5pm start now.

I emailed the SGP organisers and the reply back I had was:-

"The date of September 21st has been confirmed for this event with 17:00 start time."

Great thanks, can now look to organise ourselves.  Pity they can't put that on their website.

With the one year to go to Cardiff 2019 having elapsed luckily more hotels have come on line with availability. Unfortunately nothing shy of 150 pounds per night on the main site I use, so much for the later date " having a positive effect" on accommodation prices  !

They were never going to be any cheaper.
