Thursday night speedway at swindon

Recommended Posts

Personally I think it's wrong/unfair that swindon are allowed to race Thursdays. If anything happens to any of the riders (hope it doesnt) and they need to have a guest they will have a bigger pool of riders to choose from unlike the rest who are limited because of set nights.

Everyone should have been riding on Thursdays. That was the day that was set to be reserved for British racing but everyone else went with Wednesday because they are Ipswich and Poole's poodles.

Incidentally, their opposition on a Thursday will also have more choice of guests if needed, so where's the advantage?

Its because they cant afford a stadium and have to do what the owners say. Thursday's or nothing. Swindon obviously chose Thursday's lol.

For years, various people, fans, promoters etc. said that fixed race nights wouldn't work in Britain because clubs didn't own their stadiums and that availability is limited. This was despite the obvious advantages that fixed race nights offered in terms of reducing clashes and potentially encouraging back the top riders.

Last year we saw the BSPA actually grasp the nettle and actually make a positive decision. Monday and Wednesday was always the most obviously choice as it mean limiting disruption to both Premiership and Championship clubs, however given that not all clubs own their stadiums and that availability is limited is was unlikely all clubs would be able to achieve this from day one.

I think the solution, to allow Swindon to race half their home meetings on a Thursday, while all other clubs move to the fixed nights is the ideal compromise for the first season of fixed nights. Hopefully over time Swindon will be able to reach an agreement to allow us to fall in line with the rest of the league.

In terms of advantage, as Grachan says, this is available to both teams, so Swindon will have no more of a pool than their opponent.

Just saying  the Swindon promotion have as much control as Ford has at Poole that's all no need to be so so prickly.!!!

He wouldn’t know the answer to that question anyway Sidney, he lives in Peterborough. Ask him one about the Panthers.

Well that's just wrong isn't it... If Nick Morris gets a long term injury for example Swindon can choose any guest (willing to do it) from all teams in the league except 2 every week. If for example NKI gets a long term injury KL can only choose a guest from Swindon or the other team who aren't riding that Monday/Wednesday... how is that fair?

Because it's the same situation for the opposition.

There is, as Robert De Niro might say, a flip side to that coin.

If Iversen gets injured, then when King's Lynn are at teams riding on a Monday or Wednesday they have a limited choice of guest. When they are at Swindon they can choose any guest from any other team. Just as unfair?

That's OK if you're just treating it as a one off match... but this is league Speedway

The reason that Swindon are alone in Thursday nights is that the original fixed nights for Premiership was going to be Mon & Thur with Sheffield coming up. However, Sheffield would not come up & then there was apparently a long debate as certain Championship sides wanted to preserve their Thursday meetings. A compromise was then made & Thurs became Wed. However it is very difficult for Swindon as both Mon &  Wed, there is dog racing at the stadium, afternoons on Mon & evenings on Wed. So a concession was given to Swindon to allow them to continue in the Premiership.

Exactly, perhaps they'd prefer a seven team league.

Thoughts ?

A certain south coast promoter ballsed it up !

Colin Pratt went on record in the Speedway Star to say that it was had been agreed with the ISL (International Speedway League, a body that formulates fixtures between the UK, Poland, Sweden and Denmark) that the UK would move to Monday and Thursday for racing at Elite League level...

Hey Presto, at the next BSPA meeting, The Pirate one kicked up a fuss, and it became Monday and Wednesday !

Your thoughts on guests doesnt stack up, either  - Dont forget that a speedway meeting needs TWO teams, so, should any of Swindon's opposition need a guest, they also have a bigger pool to pick from on Thursdays !

Gaming international alias stadia UK on leasehold from both councils I'm sure you know that anyway

I did not know that Ray to be honest    one of the problems we have in speedway  are clubs not owning the stadiums.I don't if i am right on this and if Poole are the same as Swindon i think Swindon get none of the parking money / drinks food revenue  and maybe even the programmes maybe ER or Grachan would know if that is correct.??
