Workington 2018 .

Recommended Posts

Well done Worky. Lived in Cumbria and supported them 2004/5, the days of Stoney and Steady. Used to average 1200. What crowds did they have this season for league fixtures and final? Is this their first silverware?

Dont underestimate this wonderful achievement. Its massive.

To have one local rider in the team is huge. To have TWO is immense in my book.

I take my hat off to Laura and co for getting this team together. Reminds me so much of Poole in 1969 and to a lesser extent, 2018. No real big hitter, but everyone of the lads contribute to the TEAM effort. Slightly biased as Ive loved Klindts efforts for Poole this year and of course I do support Kyle Bickley.

Now go finish the season with the treble. You certainly have my support from a very sunny, but chilly,Devon.

C'mon you Comets!

Can I just say a great big thank you to everyone involved with the Comets this year, the promoters, team manager, riders, track team, everyone including the brilliant Hoggy on the mic for making this the most successful and enjoyable season ever.

No thanks of course to the people responsible for running/ruining* the sport who seemed hell bent on putting obstacles in front of us (and others) during the season. It is very apt that our latest/last attempt to run our outstanding league fixture has been abandoned due to ice!!!!

*delete as appropriate

Hopefully we will all be back next year to defend all 3 titles.

A happy (and now thankfully thawed out) Comet.

What a time to be a comets fan. Having watched since the early 70's this has been a long time coming.

I'm convinced our success has been down to building a team with strength in depth and no big hitters. Any of the riders could have ended up at reserve without altering the balance of the team. For years we have had second strings dropping to reserve and the reserve moving up and been totaly out of their depth. This year, if a rider had an off night all the others could carry him

Its fantastic to have ended the season with the team we started with and there wasn't a weak link among them. Kyle has done everything that was expected of him and this weekend showed what he can do with full credit to the management for sticking with him.

Many thanks to Laura and her team for what they have done for us and I sincerely hope that she can find the necessary backing to continue next year. Maybe someone could also be found to knock some sense into the council with their hairbrained stadium ideas. It's time they got into the real world.

Heres hoping we're all back next year to defend our THREE 7 man trophies.

Huge Congratulations to the Comets,to win one piece of Silverware in this league is a tough ask,two win 3 is a hell of a performance

i can remember thinking when the team was released earlier in the year that the 7 riders selected would take some beating but never thought it would dominate like it has

a huge and well deserved Treble!!

Great stuff for the Blue and White   Team built on strength in depth.   Goes to show the best 2 teams at very end of league campaign, Workington and Berwick were set up almost the same way

Congratulations to all at Workington Speedway on a job well done in doing the TREBLE.

Strength in depth has pulled you through even to the fact that losing young Dan did not disrupt you.

If the fans can dig deep into their pockets & help bring the Comets back in 2019 to defend their titles, it would go a long way in helping Tony, Laura & crew next year & hopefully, future years. What you can not do is move too far as you might lose some fans & not get them back. It proves with the attendance on Saturday, reported to be in excess of 1100, that interest is there even though the extra that were present were there for the history & glory.

Hoping to see ALL teams back for 2019 & a safe winter. (It arrived early for you, -1C, brrrrrr.)

Title should have been with Sheffield.

Honestly

Sheffield made the same mistake with young Josh Bates Newcastle did with Andy Tully when he came off and fractured the bone in his back before the season had started at P&P day, Sheffield waited far to long to change their team. Both clubs should have changed their starting line ups re-declaring and said to the riders when you are fit we will try and accommodate you.  But we will start with a team of seven riders from the off, not guests and R/R

However the clubs did the honourable thing and waited  for the rider to get fit and hoped they would slot back into the side sooner rather than later and in the case of Josh B it didn't happen at all which I think put a strain on the rest of the riders in the team, ultimately leaving them too much to claw back when they finally bit the bullet and replaced him which also meant the changes become more desperate, and mid-season which again is never a good thing. This wasn't the only issue but it didn't start the season off on the right foot for Sheffield at all IMHO.

It must be hard though for a promotion to go back to the drawing board when you think you have got the right formulae and team only for it all to go belly up before you have even turned a wheel

Scunthorpe did similar & not make a change but even with the loss of Worrall in our first meeting, the rest of the lads pulled together then suffered after the injury to Nielsen. They, as a team, improved their average from 42.3 to 46.2. If we had changed any of our riders in that time, they would have been snapped up & we would never have got them back.

Agreed - its a tough call and I feel it is always honourable when a club stands by a rider, it doesn't always happen unfortunately.  Workington dropped Mason Campton for a short period whilst he recovered from a broken wrist; bringing in BWD, then reverting back to their original 1-7 once Mason was ready to go again and this arrangement worked out really well for all concerned. However like everything in life some decisions work and others don't. Who would be a promoter/team manager eh!!!!
