Guest Sir Lunchalot
This one's for spaarky !! Kevin was expected to win the meeting and he did, but it was the way he won it that was so impressive. His two rides from the two outside gates were simply stunning. In his ride from gate 3 he gated behind the Jones boys (Ashley & Mark). He had a unsuccessful nibble up the inside of Mark on lap 1, had a go round the outside on lap 2 and got by, set sail after Ashley and got by with a huge outside move on lap 3 to pull away and take the win. His ride from gate 4 was nearly as good. He got pushed wide in turn 1 to find himself 4th, blasted round the outside going out of turn 2 to get third, easily took second on lap 2 and then set off after Mark Jones who had established a bit of a gap on the field. By the back straight on the last lap Doolan had nearly caught him and they went round the last turn like a pair of Siamese twins. Jones on the insde just held off Doolan in the run to the line. On that form it's a crying shame Doolan looks like spending his Oz winter weekends fishing and watching football. Anyway on to the results from a smooth fast track that had just the right amount of dirt on it to please everyone and not a single blue line to be seen. Probably as good (or even the best) racing surface that I have seen all year. I for one hope they keep going back there after what I am told has been a six year break. 1. A Jones, Ferguson, Matt Jones, Bugeja (excl) 1.02.80 2. Doolan, Gathercole, Proctor, Mark Jones (f.rem) 1.00.63 3. Doolan, A Jones, Mark Jones, Bugeja 1.02.17 4. Matt Jones, Ferguson, Gathercole, Proctor 1.03.63 5. A Jones, Proctor, Bugeja, Gathercole (fell) 1.04.69 Jones nearly fell on lap 1, Gathercole fell when well clear in first on the last bend. 6. Mark Jones, Doolan, Matt Jones, Ferguson No time 7. Doolan, Gathercole, Matt Jones, A Jones (ef) 59.56 8. Mark Jones, Ferguson, Proctor, Bugeja 1.01.70 Final (5 riders) Doolan, A Jones, Mark Jones, Ferguson, Matt Jones 59.56 **Note for Bryn ** Watch out mate, last night there was a young bloke called Ben who sounded about 12 years old calling a few races. He got a bit muddled once or twice but apart from that had all the phrases down pat and was very good for what was his first go at calling. Need an apprentice ? Guest Sir Lunchalot
With pleasure. This is a copy of what I put on the Oz yahoo speedway board. Here are the results from the Tom Gunson memorial from Myrtleford. The track was excellent and the only thing that slightly marred the meeting was the high attrition rate meaning a reduced number of starters in quite a few races. One weird thing worth noting was the starting order for the heats with (for example) German/Chisholm having all four rides in five heats between heats 2 and 6 including three in a row. Very strange. 1. Davies/Marshall, Radford/Putkunz, Quinn/Keeble (ef), Richards/Vicary DNS 1.07.59 2. German/Chisholm, McEnroe/Kavetani, Munro/Booth, Gawne/Taylor (excl) 1.05.76 3. McEnroe/Kavetani, Quinn/Keeble, Munro/Booth, Radford/Putkunz (excl) 1.11.60 4. German/Chisholm, Quinn/Keeble, King/Wood DNS, Richards/Vicary DNS 1.05.06 5. German/Chisholm, Davies/Marshall, Gawne/Taylor, Radford/Putkunz 1.06.68 6. German/Chisholm, Radford/Putkunz, McEnroe/Kavetani, King/Wood DNS 1.06.65 7. Davies/Marshall, McEnroe/Kavetani, Munro/Booth, Richards/Vicary DNS 1.07.69 8. Gawne/Taylor, Munro/Booth, King/Wood DNS, Richards/Vicary DNS 1.09.87 9. Gawne/Taylor, Quinn/Keeble (ef), Davies/Marshall ef/DNS, King/Wood DNS 1.09.79 Final German/Chisholm, Gawne/Taylor, McEnroe/Kavetani (ef), Davies/Marshall DNS No time Only two very minor whinges. First, I arrived at the track early and watched them practice, then nothing happened for ages until the juniors had their go on the junior circuit. By the time the juniors had finished it was dark and it was all set to go, yet we then had to sit and watch track preparation (which could have been done earlier) take place for over half an hour. Second, the announcer was obviously a car person because he kept plugging the various upcoming car speedway meetings in the area, plus he kept mispronouncing riders & passengers names. Only a small thing but after a while it did get on my nerves a bit. Anyway they are only fine tuning issues, I shouldn't let that detract from what was otherwise a very entertaining meeting. cablehogue4671
thanks sir l... that's tops does the track and surrounds show the effect of a long inactive period, and have you heard any 'goss' about myrtleford hosting meetings regularly again. pity that 'announcer' was'nt tossed out with the old rubbish as i recall having the same frustrations about him too many years ago good health to all cable
Guest Sir Lunchalot
Everyone I spoke to was hoping they go back to Myrtleford rather than knowing anything concrete. It's main drawback is that it's a bit out of the way and although quite good, the crowd was not the same as you might get at Undera or Mildura. The track and surrounds look like a lot of Oz tracks !! Not what you would call palatial by any means but all that you would need and the track surface was excellent. Even so I was told that when they raced there regularly the track was even better and was like a billiard table. My guess is they will wait till the dust settles, reflect on how it went this time and decide whether to keep going back. My gut feel would be they might run one or two meetings there a year on holiday weekends to help get a crowd in but not any more than that. mIcK50
Thanks for the info Lunchy. Just one little query about the Munro / Booth sidecar pairing; Is this Munro related in anyway to 1960's / 70's South Australian sidecar ace, Neil Munro? I worked for a short time with Neil years ago, in Perth, and not only was he a top sidecar rider, he was a top bloke as well. The only problem I had with him was he worked too hard! I was always trying to think of things that would slow him down a bit, because he was making me look bad!
Guest Sir Lunchalot
Not sure about the Munro family tree mick50. This Munro is Scott Munro, father of junior rider Josh and (from memory) a panel beater from out west of Melbourne. I'll see what I can find out. As an aside he has one of the prettiest sidecar outfits going around, it's kind of a metallic goldy / bronze colour (where are females when you need them to describe colours for you) and looks really smart. He won the novelty handicap on Saturday and would have been pleased as punch.
