SCORPIONS LOOKING FOR HOME COMFORT

HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions are looking to build on their “best result of the season” when they host third-placed Ipswich Witches in a SGB Championship encounter at the Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow (Sunday, 5.30pm).

Last Saturday, Scorpions took a superb 50-43 victory at Workington, their first win at Derwent Park since 1980.

Lewis Kerr (10+2), Tero Aarnio (10) and Michael Palm Toft (9+1) were the top scores in a very solid performance by the Scorpions, with new signing Jake Allen contributing 6+3.

However, Scorpions must go into action against Witches without Allen, since the Australian, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Friday, broke two small bones in his wrist, while riding at Somerset on Wednesday.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We’ve had a lot of misfortune this season, and Jake’s injury is the latest chapter of that. He’d done such a good job for us so far, scoring paid nine at Workington and then top-scoring for Scorpions in the fours at Peterborough.

“We’re hoping he won’t be out for long, while our only option against Ipswich on Sunday is to use rider replacement in his absence.

“However, we must be positive, and look to the fact that his rides can be taken by Josh Auty, Ryan Douglas and our reserves, and they all had good meetings in our victory at Workington last week.”

Ipswich Witches, who have a very potent spearhead in former British Champion Danny King and Australian international Rory Schlein, won a thriller at the Eddie Wright Raceway in May, winning by 46-44, and Sunday’s encounter promises to be another humdinger.

Godfrey comments: “It’s going to be tough because Ipswich are a good side who are very much on course to claim one of the four play-off spots. But the boys are very upbeat after the win at Workington, which was our best result of the season.

“Momentum is a big thing in speedway and we’ll be looking to maintain that.

“We’ve shown what we can do when the boys all perform to their capabilities, and we can do that again.”

There are 21 heats of action in total on Sunday, including a six-heat second half Northern Junior League match between Halifax Dukes and Northside Stars.

Admission prices for Sunday:

Not quite certain what weather forecast you are looking at.

The one where I step outside and it's usually pi$$ing it down but surprise surprise today i'm greeted with brilliant sunshine, might just go if I talk nicely to er indoors.

Connor will be at 7 Rob.

Hope Cam is OK after his spill at Leicester last night.

If he is I hope we can sneak a win much like the first visit.

Scunny seem to have found a bit of a spring in their step though.

Therefore will predict a draw! 😜

Forecast looks absolutely fine for the rest of the day as well. I'm setting off from Oxfordshire just before 2pm.

All the best

Weather a bit iffy and just seen no Jake Allen probably give this one a miss now.

if you think the weather forecast is a bit iffy for this one and you are thinking of going, one should be advised to check where the track is as you are clearly looking at a different forecast to the normal world

Looking at updates a bit surprised with the result. Can scunthorpe fans answer did there team throw this away. Losing a 5-1 in heat 12 in the slowest time of the night seems to have been the turning point. Makes you think

It was. Heeps was pretty impressive during the whole meeting but he was beatable, and there was only one place Mountain was going to finish. However, they gated in front and stayed there.

Slightly subdued afternoon at EWR with racing not quite up to the usual standard. Scunny were inconsistent and the weakness of having a high scoring reserve was shown up today when he didn't high score. I also thought the referee's decision in heat 14 was absolutely correct (and had a very good view) and that Aarnio was lucky to be in the second running of that race because it seemed to me he baled out on both occasions.

Douglas unlucky when Schleen :o:icon_smile_clown: (whoever that bloke in the box is, get rid of him) hit him; it shouldn't need a fall for a rider to be excluded.

It wasn't a case throwing it away but more a case of the home teams riders not being able to gate.

Heat 12 the turning point... pure lack of effort from the scunny pair. If betting was allowed in speedway, this would definitely smell of a scam. Slow time and zero effort from the scunny boys... it does make one think!

Danny King was a class apart, fantastic show and great to watch.

Some good racing, not a classic by ewr standards.. Several controversial reffing decisions, to be fair I agreed with most, perhaps Aanio's exclusion in heat 14 a little suspect, not that I had the greatest view of that at all. I think the ref was a tad lenient in ordering all four backs in 4 & 14, scunny lucky not to suffer exclusions in both.
