Scunthorpe V Newcastle Championship Friday 7th July 2017

Recommended Posts

yes,,, and maybe a couple of hob-nobs, chocolate or plain ???

and I didn't say I heard it from Roy, but I do understand that for some, 'listening and processing' doesn't come naturally ;)

now that would make Peetabra look like nice employers ;)

Scorpions made your Diamonds look Ruff tonight. You had 2 fine guests but the rest of them the least said the better.

Updates estimated a crowd of about 300. If anywhere near accurate that's shocking. Can't see them surviving on those sorts of figures. Shame

Might have been a little more than that but not much (I was texting). Those who stayed away missed a treat.

Four or five cracking races before an absolute stormer in heat 15. Easily the best race I have seen anywhere this season as four riders went hammer and tongs for four laps.

Little wonder there was a bit of a clamour at the end to move meetings back to Friday night.

Douglas was brilliant and Bailey hugely impressive. A word, too, for Auty who deserved more than he got.

Newcastle - not for the first time this season - were disappointing and Worrall and Howarth aside offered little.

Rob Godfrey isn't always everyones cup of tea but it was good to see him enjoying himself tonight. His baiting of referees is just superb.

Three other points of interest : an insert programme..............at half price :approve: so no-one feels ripped off. Should be standard practice. The decision to exclude Howarth in heat 13 after he pulled a locker but did not fall, Auty laying down. Spot on. And the refusal to open the pit gate after an unsatisfactory start in heat 11. Bang on and also should be standard practice.

I can see them going down into the National league as there is no way they can survive on that sort of attendance , shame as it's a good racing circuit and they are at a position where they most likely can't cut costs down anymore than what they already have done.

Rob Godfrey runs Stockcars to make money to keep his beloved Speedway running. Speedway will survive at the EWR no doubt about it, as Rob is so passionate about this sport. He is not under the influence of landlords and can run events when he wants. We are not having the best season but the racing is still superb on an excellent track.

I for one prefer a settled night track to a 5.30 afternoon meeting with the varying track conditions.

Great meeting from a Scunny point of view.. What a refreshing change.

Some great racing.. superb entertainment.. wow heat 15, that's why we go to speedway.. (4 racers, 4 laps, great stuff).

Dougie and Tero banging in the points, that's much more like it. Little Josh has come back from his injury break on fire, wilko put a good shift in.. as too Josh Auty.

Howarth was again great value round the EWR.. Richie Worrall too, good effort and a tremendous heat 15 win. Special mention to Alfie Bowtell, seven rides for two points, no way was that a reflection of his efforts.. deserved much more, definitely one to watch.. diamonds got a gem there.

Yeah but... What does Scunny enjoy that others don't?... no rent, all bar and café takings are theirs, amateur meetings, training sessions and mini track... all contribute to the running of speedway. I'd say regardless of numbers through the gate, we're still the envy of most.

Lets hope things pick up for you , like you say facilities are self owned which must go a long way and would be the desire of most other clubs , but you would have to question are attendances of around 300ish going to be enough bearing in mind you will still have to put out a competitive team to perform at this level but I wish your management all the best and I hope Scorpions will be at the tapes in the championship for 2018.

Always enjoy my visits to the EWR. The only criticism would be the low viewing positions

I agree, 5.30 is too early when the track dries out we seem to lose a lot of our home track advantage and I think its costing us points and probably supporters. Also there is less dust, better racing, less grading and possibly a safer track due to the consistency in the surface.I think back to 6.30 Sunday or 7.30 Friday next year.

I think crowd was always going to be down because

- the meeting on Sunday was crap from Scunny perspective and it dragged on a bit

- Friday is not the usual race night,

- Newcastle never bring many fans

- There was speedway on tv

being a rearranged match i would of guessed many fans may of made prior plans, coupled with 2 meetings in a week and losing at home again last time, and scunny being a steel town i bet some were on shift work, myself and a friend included, i am guessing the crowd was at its "die hard" fan level?, also reading on here about seeing teams turn up with 2 guests( and one saying not howarth again) may have help decide whether to go or not,

rob said on the mic to former promoter ted hornsby that he hates stocks but they make a hell of a lot of money to help run the speedway,

ps, 6.30 on a sunday for me due to reason above and you may lose some of those who travel furthur a field trying to get here after finishing work

So Halifax Tiger you like the keep the gate shut rule made up by Sunny officials when Mr Worrall needed it. There would be no delay as 2 minutes was already on.

Fast forward 2 heats..... Two minutes goes on and Auty needs help and the pit gate opens......

You never commented hat it should have been kept closed then.

Would say 300 is an overstatement, but was up against a TVs meeting and an off night.

rather an odd statemnt considering Auty had been on his arse due to laying the bike down and a bike in need of some work....so quite how you can compare the two is supriising

A really good meeting,Howarth and Richie very good for the Diamonds, special metion for Richie winning heat 15,a great ride to emerge infront in that race

Douglas and Bailey deservered a mention for their performances

Scunny seemed alot more comfortable on track last night, and a perfect track it was, really tip top race surface, helped im sure by being flooded thursday night with a thunder storm

last but not least,Alfie Bowtell, feck can he trap!! deserved more really last night
