There was an Aussie who rode in the 80s. What was his name? Dave... something....

Oh yeah, Dave Cheshire.

Ronnie Moore?

Cheshire?

OK - tell me what I am missing here. I'll be the fall guy. Surely he was from Tasmania?

I somehow know that you venerable Speedway luminaries will have an answer - but I'm damned if I can see what it is.

Definitely Chershire, TWK, just like Les Moore and Ray Moore. All Cheshire.

I think you are missing the point of this thread.

It's very similar to the best riders from Lancashire thread. There's a good reason Declan ECCLES is included ahead of Peter Collins for example

And can I just say wash your mouth out TWK. Ronnie may have been born is Tasmania but he's "from" NZ!

...Tasmania comes under the flag of Australia so Ronnie was actually born Australian and could have ridden for Australia but chose, instead, to ride for New Zealand...his adopted home.

Being a kiwi I'm reasonably aware of where Tasmania is! My point is that there is a difference between being born somewhere and being "from" somewhere. My brother was born in Huddersfield, but he's say he's from NZ given that he's only lived in the uk for 3 out of 34 years of his life.

...er yes I understand what you were implying with your initial post to which I added an observation that Ronnie could have chosen to ride for either his place of birth, and presumably parentage, Australia (which I understand he seriously considered way back when he started out on his long career) or New Zealand.

I recall Mitch Shirra had a similar choice (and if I recall did actually turn out for Australia) before adopting New Zealand although, apparently, he could have ridden for Scotland as well!

There's obviously a differential margin where one was born and where one was bred...some people chose either depending on the criteria under discussion whether it sport or other walks of life.

PS Having visited Huddersfield I can well understand why your brother regards himself as a Kiwi!

Ronnie did actually ride for Australia.Think it might have been the first country he rode for, then went on to choose NZ

Indeed. In his first season in the UK Ronnie rode for Australia against England at Wimbledon. Not sure if this was his international debut though

1951,52 and 53 he was also in the Australian team

You've exactly the same as I did on the Lancashire thread - read only the title and not the opening posts - doh!

Absolutely correct. Ronnie spent his first few years riding for Australia, and his early World Finals were as an Australian.

What a great record Ronnie had he appeared in 14 world Finals and to think he also had a gap in his riding career 1963 until 1969 six seasons out ( Why was that.??? was it businesss interests.?? LEGEND. Edited by Sidney the robin

Saw Ronnie ride twice during his last season in Britain (1972) and it was clear then what a class act he still was. I remember him scoring 14 points at Poole whilst riding for 'The Dons' and during an end of season challenge at Tilehurst (Reading).
