​Al Holliday started as track raker at Wimbledon in the early 1950s. Graduated to one of the four uniformed start line officials, and then made two world final appearances in the same role at Wembley in the late 1950s.

He was also a mechanic to riders John Gronow (Eastbourne) and Maury McDermott (Rayleigh) in the 1950s. And in the early 1960s with McDermott and others was involved in the promotion of speedway at Rayleigh.

Holliday was also a junior speedway rider at California-in-England and Eastbourne in 1954-55, and later became pits marshal for some years in the mid-1950s at Eastbourne.

In the early 1960s besides his involvement in the Rayleigh promotion Holliday also competed in several junior races at The Weir.
