The Race For The Play-offs

Recommended Posts

We are approaching the half way point of the season, so where are we ? I like to use the +/- system as applied to the league table to show what's really going on. The system eliminates the differences in home and away matches ridden. For points dropped at home it is minus and points gained away are a plus. So if every fixture from hereon in is a home win, this is how the table will end up. So the league table as at 27th June is:-

Belle Vue +16

Wolves +8

Poole +6

King's Lynn +4

Swindon +1

Rye House 0

Somerset -8

Leicester -11

This shows that Belle Vue are streets ahead and will finish top. Their away form is tremendous with only 2 away defeats. As to the others, I think that's how it will end with Wolves, Poole and King's Lynn being the other qualifiers. Swindon have surprised most people, but they have run into bad luck with Doyle's injury and I think that will be too much to overcome. Rye House will probably be happy enough to win their remaining home matches and not lose anymore. Sadly for Somerset and Leicester they are fighting to avoid last place.Still a long way to go, but Belle Vue's signing of Tungate I think is a game changer, and one that wins them the league.

Would agree with the top 4, with Aces at number 1, unless Swindon can miraculously overcome the Doyley absence. Wouldn't put it past them.

Somerset or Leicester fighting for wooden spoon as predicted.

Any idea what will happen at Thursday's meeting? I assume you'll have a Guest for Doyle and possibly for Morris too?

Batch is in very good form at the moment so a good choice of Guest although I'm not sure how he usually goes at Swindon. As for Morris and other Speedway riders, you can't have a fully ticking brain if you actually choose to get on a 500cc engine with no brakes! :D;)

I'ts great seeing the Aces at the top,but that means nowt unless you win the P/Off final, for me it will be another Aces -Wolves final with Wolves lifting the trophy after the 2 legs. Why, because Wolves have a good home advantage, we have none.

Doesn't feel like a race - more like a stroll.

Hard to see any change in the top four (particularly if Swindon are without Doyle for a number of matches) unless something goes badly wrong for King's Lynn.

Spot on. In all reality the rest of the season is all just preparation for Wolves, Belle Vue, Poole and Lynn for the play offs.

There has never been a more predictable season in regards to who would qualify for the play offs, as it's been obvious right from April.

Looks like Aces have moved ahead in the table topping race and look the team to beat.

However it's form and rider stability in September that is paramount.

I can't see beyond a Wolves/Aces final again and that's where it gets hard to call.

Poole of course can never be written off and with the transfer market open till end of July there could be more changes that could see them much stronger by September.

Play-offs are a long way off, anything can happen in the interim, loss of form, injuries,Poole strengthening up etc.
