Here's a rider 'knocking at the door' for inclusion: Wilbur Lamoraeux. He rode pre- and post-war in the UK for Wimbledon, Wembley and Birmingham.

Very different to the other thread as the era under discussion here covers riders who competed pre-war right up to the present date.

I would, therefore, find it difficult naming a top five based upon the years involved and especially difficult considering that the sport was very different pre-war but here goes...

1. Sprouts Elder

2. Jack Milne

3. Cordy Milne

4. Scott Autrey

5. Bruce Penhall

But then again...?

Perhaps I was over enthusiastic about Wilbur Lamoreaux!

No idea why you are laughing. For you that was a reasonable suggestion :rofl:

I still have the greatest reservations on how I seemed to support Wilbur Lamoreaux.

I thought long and hard about that. I allowed my prejudice against him to rule my head. I still do.

So, the answer to your question is No!! No Penhall.

is that due to the white City incident?

If it is, is there a reason you don't feel similarly to ermolenko and Hancock?

No, actually it isn't. Though I admit that I didn't like that either.

I didn't like the way that he ended his Career. I was disgusted with him then and am disgusted with him now.

fair enough.

Specifically was it the way he ditched the heathens (handing Aces the title which surely was a good thing!)?

Or bowing out on home soil as double world chsmpion, to pursue a career in Hollywood rather than Dudley Wood?

Thing is, there have been many other riders who have retired mid-season - for a number of reasons. Okay, he was a high-profile character, but it is a rider's right to retire...

Of those I've seen,

Penhall

Autrey

King

K Moran

S Moran

Res : Hamill

The ageing current Grand Prix champion excluded himself from selection with his Pedersen attack and his Melbourne antics

Of course, all of my six selections were squeaky clean!!!!!

Very true. And their decision in this respect should always be accepted.

There is an article in and American publication in which the author deviates away from the threads request by naming 10 top American riders. It is an interesting item. The writer names these riders:

Kelly Moran

Bobby Schwartz

Sprouts Elder

Jack Milne

Shawn Moran

Sam Ermolenko

Billy Hamill

Mike Bast

Bruce Penhall

Greg Hancock
