waytogo28
We all make risk assessments in our lives every day ( consciously or unconsciously ). Some get it wrong and pay for it with an injury or worse. Our own decisions became a problem for the wider world if there is an insurance claim or a formal H&S issue. We have an extraordinary amount of "choice" about how we live our lives and sometimes we choose wrongly. Unless it affects others or breaks a law that is how life is.

I used to be a Safety Rep at both the University Department and later at a museum attraction in York and, although I did all the relevant courses and training, common sense at the end of the day is fundamental...unfortunately an attribute sadly lacking amongst many people!
Vince
Its the claim culture that is the issue. If he wants to walk around in flip flops it's not a problem. If he gets hurt as long as he can resist the urge to grab a couple of grand it's still not a problem. Not sure if I was a promoter I'd be willing to risk having to pay out that couple of grand rather than get him to wear something appropriate.
Wee Eck
Just catching up on this. Shocking! Josh should be transported back to Aussie. A fine pair of trainers would be much more protection from any engine being dropped on his toes.....yeh right. Come to think of it, looking at page 9 of this week's Star, Natalie Quirk should have been pulled up for wearing girlie shoes in the pits. Proper steel toe capped boots should have been the minimum. How dare she? 😜
Lord Skid
Think you will find 'Mechanics' will be wearing appropriate clothing, grease monkeys, lackeys, and hangers on, will be wearing flip flops etc.
f-s-p
If they were Ipanema's, he should be deported. Ripcurls are fine.
scaramanga
well we noticed it too and did coment that we were surprised it was allowed now i agree to a point that full on safety boots might be slightly over the top but flip flops are not what id expect to see i can remeber richard juul at workington spinning the back wheel in the pits before the meeting checking the clutch he got his fingers caught in the chain resulting in loosing part of finger/fingers so h&s is something to be considorded
ColnagoDream
ah bless your such a softee, I have news for you , thousands of people die everyday, it's the way life is, reading your posts recently you sound like a real bundle of joy to be around and do you really think thrill seekers like speedway riders care a hoot about wearing proper footware ? Or any sort of health and safety for that matter  That would be the same thrill seekers that wont ride when is raining?
Sotonian
Jason Bunyan's female mechanic (wife/girlfriend?) used to wear flip-flops in the pits too. Edited June 23, 2017 by Sotonian

Midland Red
No wonder UK speedway is in the state it is, when an Australian is allowed to wear flip flops in the pits (or is paddock nowadays)
Dornier
At the end of my working carrer I did a bit of agency work. I was posted to the car auctions ( BCA ). In one week when it was roasting hot and it is hot work getting in and out of cars that have been shut up in the sun all day a contracted BCA worker donned his shorts, the management told him straight away to put his trowsers on, the reason given was that he could burn his legs on an hot silencer. THE DEAN MACHINE
Â That would be the same thrill seekers that wont ride when is raining? I never ever refused to ride any track or any conditions ever , even going against my team mates , as far as I was concerned the wetter the better
DSC67
Why stop at flip flops ? Surely he should have been wearing gloves , protective glasses & ear defenders too , also I'm not sure about shorts and a short sleeved T-shirt it's possible they could also be construed to be a safety risk as wel . Personally I couldn't care less what's on his feet and I can't say I'm surprised that's what he was wearing seems fairly normal footwear for most antipodean folks especially speedwayriders in my experience
Lord Skid
Let's make it compulsory for work permit Riders to wear flip flops, that'll soon free up some places for British lads.
Hamish McRaker
No wonder UK speedway is in the state it is, when an Australian is allowed to wear flip flops in the pits (or is paddock nowadays)It sums up the state of the country for me. We've been taken over by flip-flop wearing antipodeans or faux Australian surfers and bloody lefty metropolitan liberals. Wouldn't surprise me to see that Grajonek walking out the pits wearing pink flip-flops, mini skirt and toe nails painted bright red next time. It's not hard to figure out why Muslims see this country as a soft target to take over, which will happen soon the way things are going. JOS50
check out the gloves the riders are wearing these days they offer little or no protection, they are like socks Will do, though it might be better if I don't, being extremely aware of the risks the guys are taking. In case you haven't already, check out a set of early two piece leathers, thick leather a mass of padding and heavy. We were discussing Pit Rules and Regulations. Riders themselves wear Boots anyway - we are discussing the case of a Mechanic. In this instance a Rider who was acting as a Mechanic for a Rider during the Meeting - we were not discussing Riders per sé. Take your point, I was mainly referring Dean Machines point about thrill seeking riders not giving a hoot and no I wouldn't wear flip-flops inthe pits.
