Guest
David Mason will take plenty of points off a long tail but I doubt he will touch our top three. Lets see how he does in a head to head with Paul Hurry. Birmingham have made it VERY clear in the role they see for David Mason. I wouldn't worry too much about head-to-head races for him. He's wanted in the role of "...solid middle order scorer..." as I see it. http://www.birmingha...php?extend.2483 David Mason was the winner after Paul Hurry fell in what 'SPEEDWAY UPDATES" describes as the best race of the night. Mason finished the match with a six paid eight score. Edited June 21, 2017 by Guest

ProudtobeaBrummie
I have to question the decision to make JPB captain thrust into number 1 then with the added pressure of captain all after serving a ban for withholding hes services... Not asking too much of a 16 year old whos only rode main body nl speedway for 3 months ... enjoyable meeting zach was class what a star he is . Carr jumping the start 3 times well im not sure he did once he missed the tapes by a distance...

liam
Surely Lakeside can find some youngster better than Laurence, no disrespect to him but he's past 30 and still shuts off the throttle half way down the straight at home.
Scott Cassell
The referees need to distinguish between moving at the start and quick reactions when the tapes go up. Both of Liam's "offences" were when he was on gates 2 and 3. The tapes tonight are a bit like me - a bit saggy in the middle, so if he was rolling or jumping the start he couldn't have avoided the tapes. The fact was he was wrongly penalised for good reactions. That said Lakeside deserved a point, so in the end it did not matter. Zach was quality, shame he now rides for Lakeside. Mason made decent starts and got an excellent win in heat 12, which went a long way to sealing the win. Taylor Hampshire rode really well, looked to get to grips with the track well. I think there are a few better teams than Birmingham this year and unless they improve the reserves, they will fall short of winning anything. No matter, lets hope the young lads can continue to develop during the season.
marko
You would honestly think so Liam, As you say he is past 30 and I recall someone saying he's been riding for a few years, so this is very probably his level, he won't get any better. The shame is I saw riders racing last season before the main meeting that were probably better but they are either racing elsewhere or just a bit too young to sign. Fact is he isn't really good enough to ride as a reverve yet alone in the number two spot.

In the late 1940s Harold McNaughton and Tom Oakley were both 38 years old when they started in speedway. They went on to ride at the old National League Division One level and also were capped to ride for England in Division Two matches. And in the early 1960s Wal Morton and Geoff Pymar were both in their 50s yet holding down team places and leading scorers for their then teams at Bradford and Middlesbrough. Later Morton was still riding for Hackney when past his 54th birthday.

We still have a rider who has been riding ten years and has hardly improved at all. I agree he is not really good enough to ride as reserve. It's only a matter of time before drops back to reserve and Couzins come up, which unfairly puts more pressure on Couzuns. Laurence is just not doing his job. He is probably the worst rider I have ever seen in the number 2 race jacket, The results show they did the right thing in getting rid of Mason though. uk_martin
Fully agree - a couple of very costly falls. Paul Hurry simply can't cope with Perry Barr. That's 5 races I've seen him in there, and he's fallen in 3 of them, including the one in 2007(?) in which he got that nasty injury. Not what you'd expect from a "World Cup Hero" as he was being billed.

Guest GiveusaB
If Hurry had scored to his average, Hammers would have won this. If Parkinson Blackburn had of scored his average Birmingham would have walked it !!! As previously pointed out? putting JPB as captain has piled on unnecessary pressure that a developing 16 year old doesnt need ! JPB needs a decent sponsor....his bike wasnt quick enough last night! Taylor Hampshire was the star of the show.....BRILLIANT! Zach was good, but I think Carr would have beat had the referee not been a Lakeside season ticket holder! Hampshire gets a blast of momentum to pass Couzins for 2nd. Could be a vital 5-1 for the Brummies. Best race of the night so far. Huge cheer for the crowd. In heat 12 Hurry fell off so Mason beat his reserve team mate and a Lakeside reserve . Before that he scored three points f rom three rides. If the Brum promotion are happy with that then that's fine but I'm glad he's gone from Lakeside.

waco
Good performance from Lakeside,,there are a lot of if,s and but,s on here from both sides ,,which, all though i was not there personally appear to cancel one another out,,so probably a fair result... When David Mason and Paul Hurry met in heat 12, as the following quote indicates Mason had the advantage. I don't understand this 'eternal' vendetta against Mason - and for that matter Nick Laurence. East End Fan
Lakeside lived to regret losing Mason to Birmingham last night ! He scored his inevitable 7/8 points as a sound middle order man AND stayed on his bike ! An essential requirement. Wish I had been able to be there. Must have been a great meeting. waco
Obviously Gustix you are Davids biggest fan even though you do not see him ride ,,through no fault of your own,,and indeed he will do a regular middle order good job for any team with out taking any chances and at his age that is reasonable to expect,,,The problem is most fans find him boring to watch ..He did a perfectly decent stint for Lakeside,,but bringing in Hurry has made the team stronger. with the exception of last night of course....Your support is admirable.and I am glad he is fixed up with Birmingham and hope he has a good safe season there ..
