Biggest And Most Important Bspa Meeting

Super League 12 for me would be

 

Wolverhampton

Belle Vue

Kings Lynn

Ipswich

Poole

Glasgow

Sheffield

Rye House

Swindon

Somerset

Peterborough

Edinburgh

 

Best supported? Best facilities?

 

I see we have now sneaked in at the bottom - why the change of heart?

One lap dashes are not the answer imo. Speedway is at its best when there is overtaking, think mort or Pc or darcy stalking someone for three and a half laps then passing them on the last bend.

Better fixture planning would get rid of most of the du issues

Team meetings will never be what they used to be. Not enough riders to around and not enough home grown talent. Team riding is rare and a skill that the current crop of riders seem difficult to get to grips with. Maybe the bikes, tyres, tracks, I don't know but it seems more often than not a case of gate and go. If league racing cannot fulfil a season why not have individual riders attached to a 'team name' who ride a series of individual meetings around all UK tracks and the top seven scoring individual riders represent the teams they are attached to and then say the riders attached to the top eight teams then contest a play off and final. Those not in the play offs compete for the 'most' individual winners' event on an elimination basis over twenty meetings. For the league meetings, one home and one away for all league clubs with the top four finishers drawn to make play offs. Three competitions and weekly racing at every track if arranged properly. Just an thought but no chance of it happening but something needs to change dramatically for the sport to survive on anything other than a amateur basis

I don't think there is anything wrong with the basic product. People get hung up on guests, doubling up and how this can be explained to newcomers. Well don't. Let them concentrate on the basic product of four fast, dangerous bikes. But fans need to be entertained for the 90 minutes / two hours the meeting lasts. How do you keep fans entertained during the breaks between racing? There are various ways, music, interviews, competitions, whatever you choose. But never let the public get bored. That is a cardinal sin.

Basic facilities are also important. Remember you are competing against football, rugby and other sports clubs with beautiful all-seater stadiums.

Knowing the clubs will do everything in their powers to ensure the meetings go ahead is also important. How many fans have given up travelling because they have been bitten before travelling to an away meeting, only to find it postponed.

The most basic of principles, give the fans value for money and a night / day out they will enjoy.

The sport also needs to build a lot of bridges with the national press. I still find it hard to believe in this day and age how a highlights package can't be put together for TV. Or a podcast available for fans to download and listen to. Anything that gets the sport more exposure.

Promoters also needs to promote the sport more, both locally and the BSPA on a national basis.

Got to get them into the stadiums before they can see it, and as we already know, that's not going to happen. There are reasons why I don't go to football or rugby or basketball or ice hockey, and any other sport I don't go and watch..just the same reason as other people don't go to speedway.

There is much wrong with the basic product when such matches happen- KL Stars V Wolverhampton last night. It proved the point again ( as in Stars V BV not long ago ) that Gate and Win is the most likely outcome of the majority of speedway races - after exiting the 2nd bend of the 1st lap. Not all but the vast majority. And at many tracks ( if not all ) Could racing have been improved with different track prep.? That is question that many KL fans are asking. The highlights would have been 59 secs long - one race. The VFM was very poor and most fans knew that would be the case before they went - and a good number stayed away.

IF an idea like this can pull in more spectators to watch the meetings why not? What we are offering is NOT pulling in any noticeable number of new fans. Thinking out of the box needs to be considered. Slower, identical bikes drawn from a pool of machines is likely to result in closer, perhaps better racing. Something needs to be done to make people watch it again. More fans go to stock car racing at KL than watch speedway! Most fans loathe Gate and Go, so reducing that and increasing the unpredictability may be a solution. Is the Gerhardt one step towards that? Perhaps, but a cheaper stock engine 250 / 350 single could help much more?

That is the answer of what is needed in a nutshell. Knowledgeable fans know that at the moment there is little chance of that if the rider who trapped does not make a mistake. Even a much lower averaged / ability rider can pull it off.

And YES if double upping is to be continued with then much better fixture planning is certainly needed.
