E I Addio
Oliver Hart, pre-WW2 at Liverpool, Belle Vue, post WW2 with Wimbledon, then Bradford. The picture looks definitely post war to me judging by the bike and the shape of the handlebars, probably the Jack Young era I would guess when most were by that date riding foot forward. Wasn't Oliver Hart the last of the fairly good riders to stick with leg trailing ? It was before my time so I am basing my opinion on other old photographscofvthe early '50s. Great picture though, possibly the best shot of Oliver Hart Inhave seen. I guess towards the end of his career ? What happened to him ? False dawn
It never occurred to me before, but what is the technical / speed considerations between leg trailing and leg forward? We must assume that leg forward proved faster. But was this accompanied by other technical changes in the bikes of the time? It might be interesting to see a rider try leg trailing now. Just imagine the effect if he started to do well? Looking at some of the photos above, if someone did start leg trailing, it could be that the authorities might change the rules to say riders have to wear dirt deflectors! Split
I believe the last of the leg trailers was Ray Cousins who was still using that style in the 60's. I seem to remember seeing him ride in the second-halves at New Cross but he never made the team. Edited May 15, 2017 by Split
Split
Was Ray Cousins the last leg trail rider? This is him in action at Rye House in 1964. PLEASE - no more post 1950s photos please. This one is an exception to the rule! Look at those handlebars. He would never have managed it on Ken McKinlay's machine.

Celticman
When I started going to Wimbledon in the mid fifties there were no leg trailers in the National League. I remember one week they arranged for Howdy Byford to do a four lap demo by himself with an older style bike. It was awesome and the crowd stood and gave him a great round of applause as he flashed across the finish line on his back wheel. Howdy was a great character as noted elsewhere. Guest
I don't understand this happening? In preceding Posts thee is no image visible (at least on on m screen), just a small box style symbol. But I have found if one clicks on that box the image becomes visible. Or at least it does for me. Are any other followers of the thread having the same thing happen for them? Not a very happy state affairs IMO. `is there any easier solution? I am sure there must be a solution/answer to this happening. Edited February 14, 2020 by Guest
