Suez Lions 1947

In the immediate years after the end of WW2, British soldiers and airmen based in the Suez Canal Zone of Egypt ran their own version of speedway.

I am fairly certain that Billy Bales, later associated with distinction for Yarmouth and Norwich was among the riders who raced there.

In regard to this form of speedway on a track/tracks created in the desert, I believe there was team racing and that Suez Lions was one of the participant sides. But my overall knowledge of this is extremely sketchy.

Can any BSF member provide more details of speedway in the Suez Canal Zone circa 1946-49 period please. I am certain that I read an article in the old 'Monthly Speedway World' on speedway in this area and that it claimed the top team was the Suez Lions.

It would seem if Billy Bales did ride there it wasn't during the period you mention. He done his national service during the 1950-1952 period, which is outside your time span
