90th Anniversary In 2018!

Recommended Posts

How is British Speedway going to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the first speedway meeting at High Beech?

What would the fans like?

Perhaps British Speedway should start saving some money for the 100th Anniversary. (Always assuming that Speedway in Britain still exists in ten years time).

The 90th, though a long time, isn't really a milestone Event.

I last went to High Beech in 1968 and it was excellent! So much enthusiasm and happy banter between fans of different clubs! I now feel ( yes and before you mention it I am nearly 50 years older ) but it feels as if nothing is like that in speedway in the 21st century. There is no atmosphere at my local club and it's all gone flat since the last century ended. Hardly worth celebrating a 90th but we could ( those believers amongst us ) get on our knees and pray that the centenary will be celebrated in 2028. Or will it be a reading of the obituary at the Commemorative Service at Paradise Park?

2017 is BVs 90th season. 2018 is BV 90th anniversary.

According to Defunct Tracks website Belle Vue's first meeting was on March 23, 1929:

That says Hyde Road first hosted speedway in 1929, but Belle Vue rode at Kirkmanshulme Lane in 1928

I stand corrected. Here is the Defunct Tracks Link to Kirkmanshulme Lane in 1928:

It isn't? I'll be pleased to reach 90

I bet you would be even more pleased to reach 100.

90 = Nothing in my book.

100 = Something really special and well worth celebrating..

That goes without saying but to me 90 years is significant, we may not be here in 10 years!

I'd love to say, let's start a supporters' fund up for our 100th Anniversary celebrations, not sure if it would be a goer or not?

I think that would be a good idea. There could be problems though. Who would administer the Fund, who would decide how the money was spent in ten years time, where would the incoming money (if any) be invested over the next ten years?

As you say - probably not a goer - but a good idea nonetheless,

Not really true.

From the very first meeting in 1929 at Hyde Road it WAS 'Belle Vue.

But Speedway in Kirky Lane the year before in 1928 was never 'Belle Vue'

That was a 'retro fit' from 1988 when the Aces moved in.

But not historically accurate.

Technically nobody was called anything in 1928, since there was individual racing only. However, it was the same speedway club who ran at Kirky Lane in 1928 and then moved to Hyde Road in 1929.

The 1st season of operation was 1928; the 90th season is 2017.

All the best

Rob

Me of course 😊 Nah, we would have to get a Committee together I guess, perhaps from different supporters clubs around the country and come up with a vision for the 100th anniversary celebrations.

The first meeting in Manchester was 25 June 1927 at Droylsden.

The first meeting at Belle Vue was 28 July 1928 at the Belle Vue Greyhound Stadium, this lead to the construction of a purpose built stadium for 1929 still in Belle Vue on Hyde Road.

2017 is the 90th season of speedway racing at Belle Vue, July 2018 is the 90th anniversary date, during the 91st season.
