Small Speedway Trip

Recommended Posts

Hi all, don't post much but do read plenty of content . , get little time off work but cannot wait to see the following fixtures next week

Travelling on my own from Preston , Lancs to Sheffield to see the fixture versus Berwick on the 6th April , spending the night in Sheffield and making the journey north to Edinburgh to watch the Monarchs v Scunthorpe on the 7th April and tucked into a nice ( hopefully ) little B and B , then plan on having the day around the Lindisfarm area on the saturday before travelling to watch the Bandits take on Edinburgh on the 8th April then spending the night in a little B and B on the outskirts of Berwick before travelling down the coast to get to the Eddie Wright Raceway to watch Scunthorpe host Glasgow on the 9th April and then home to Preston , circa 770 miles and 4 meetings in 4 days and looking at the weather ( pray to the gods ) which all looks good at present and a couple of new tracks for me - Berwick and Edinburgh and any advice / places to visit would be very much appreciated and if anybody is at those fixtures then I hope the racing is good and Ill be the one stood on my own and possibly asleep :)

I know this sport gets bashed plenty but I love it and have been awaiting this for a good few weeks ....

Chris

When you are at Edinburgh ask about the Speedway museum in Edinburgh.... you might be lucky and it could be one of the weekends that they open up.

There is a video on line called cinder to shale which previews the museum

You're never alone at a Speedway meeting ~ just plonk yourself next to a group of home fans and start talking, but not during a race of course. Sounds like a great few days in prospect so hope the weather behaves and you have a lovely time.

I tend to do this about once a month leaving Wednesday and returning Sunday and taking in 5 meetings. After April, they will all be down south but its Edinburgh, Berwick & Newcastle this weekend.

Its all about the weather - while travelling around this beautiful nation of ours is a big bonus, its pants if the meeting is called off.

Can recommend an absolutely excellent overnight stop for Edinburgh if you haven't already booked.

2015 I did Somerset, Poole and Swindon on my bike with overnights in Somerset and Poole . I had a cracking few days despite Poole being rained off. Saw Darcy Ward before he's accident in the Swindon meeting and that lives with me still. Very special. Hopefully do a northern tour this year on the bike.enjoy yourself ps

The coast around Berwick, Lindisfarne etc is really good - wild.

If you like castle there is Bamburgh Castle - used in more then a few films, its still standing, open to the public and lived in.

About 10 miles south west of Bamburgh is Chillingham castle, again lived in, open to the public.

We first went to Chillingham castle about 35 years ago and it was just being revitalised, then about 10 years ago we visited again and it looked brilliant but still being worked on, by now it should be back to how it was originally.

If you want a trip arond the farne islands, go to Seahouses/North Sunderland and boats sail from there. Seahouses is nice and quiet place.

Probably have a museum in Coldstream (about 8 miles south west of Berwick), probably at Darlington a railway museum, on the way to Scunthorpe you pass by Harrogate, nice spa town with Aunt Bessies tea Room (but expensive).

You will be skirting the north Yorks moors as well, Whitby is nice if you can get to it AND of course that is Heartbeat country - Goathland is the village used in the tv series - interesting visit.

There is loads to do/see

To be fair Great Briain has some bloody fantastic scenery, but most of us don't realise it till we're getting the old silver highlights in our hair. As one of my mates said on a jollyboys awayday to London to watch The Mighty Yellows(poorer football teams are available) by train a few years back, this countryside is fantastic and even nicer from the train than driving Edited by Triple.H.

Love it up there.

Good list of places, but you missed out the Roman Wall, and Alnwick Castle where external period shots are filmed for Harry Potter Films. :P
