We used to have a fair few gangs of us into speedway so there was always a meeting of some sorts going on. Amazing what I used be able to do on my many old push bikes, trying to imitate PC and Mort. Coming a cropper many times but bouncing back up again. I struggle to tie my shoe lace or put my pants on these days

3 April The second round of the South West and Wales Spring Cup produced some great racing on a perfect sunny spring day. Newport ran out very narrow winners with 93.5 points to Horspath's 92 and Poole on 82.5. Many youngsters were on show, along with the more experienced heads, which resulted in some cracking racing and plenty of racing incidents. A race between Newport's Chris Davies and Dan Bock against Poole's Will Bristow and Callum Smith gave the match that rare dead heat, where referee Colin Simmons couldn't split Callum and Dan on the line. The first round of the South East and East British Youth & Junior League (BYJL) took place at Kesgrave on Saturday 8th April. The weather was ideal for racing being still, warm and dry. It was good to see riders from Great Blakenham, Hethersett, Norwich, Ipswich and Kesgrave on the entry list but special mention must go to our new friends from Hellingly who made the long trip from the south coast with eight riders. Bury CSC held its annual Good Friday charity ride which is, almost unbelievably, in its twenty-fifth year.

With the weather not as great as it has been in recent years, only around ten intrepid club members, family and friends completed the off-road route which followed the course of the River Irwell towards Manchester.

Each year the event raises money for club funds as well as a selected charity which, for 2017, is a local charity, Jigsaw.

Jigsaw organise sport, leisure and social events for disabled people in Bury.

Initial estimates are that around £300 has been raised.

Thanks to all involved.

CLUB NEWS: MONARCHS SUFFER BREAK IN – BIKES STOLEN

Birmingham Monarchs club officials and volunteers arrived at the Perry Bar track on Sunday to find one of the Portakabins broken in to, which stores bikes with 7 riders bikes stolen and vandalism to a new decking area.

Neighbours of the surrounding area reported banging and hammering late Friday night, with police attending reporting that the Portakabin was locked and secure. Neighbours also reported to the club that at 6pm Saturday night the locks were still in place.

Track officials arrived Sunday morning to find the hinge smashed off and only top standard senior and junior bikes being taken. The track is situated in Perry Hall Playing Fields.

Club chairman, Phil Widdas, spoke on behalf of all club members by adding: “It’s mindless vandalism. The bikes are no good for anyone else. They have no brakes or gears and specialised frames and equipment. What good will they be to anyone else?”

He went on to add: “We are a small community based sport with a lot of kids as well that have had their bikes stolen. Parents as well as the senior riders don’t have £500 knocking around to go buy a new one just like that. It just rips the heart out of what we are trying to achieve within our community.

“So we urge anyone everyone to keep their eyes peeled in case they are abandoned or tried to be sold one. Please call 101 as we have a crime reference number logged.”

It’s terrible news for the Monarchs who are working so hard in all areas. Hopefully the bikes can somehow be recovered.
