Speedway Star Back Cover Photos In 1976 And 1977

Can any of you devoted speedway lovers please help out with the following question which relates to the New National League Riders Championships in 1976 and 1977. The following two photos appear to have been on the back covers of two issues of the Speedway Star magazine and most probably appeared shortly after the meetings at Wimbledon on the 2nd October 1976 and the 24th September 1977.

Does anyone have the relevant magazines and, if so, can you please let me have the dates they were published? I think the Speedway Star was issued every Saturday back then.

Many thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

I started getting speedway star in 1976 and to my knowledge it has not been published on a Saturday. The only change I can think of is that more recently Monday's results have been included in the Thursday edition of the same week.

Long time ago now but I think that I used to get 'The Star' on a Wednesday and 'The Mail' on a Thursday?

the 1976 Speedway Star featuring Joe Owen is dated Saturday 27 November and the 1977 Speedway Star featuring Colin Richardson is dated Saturday 5 November.

The dates on the Speedway Star in 1976 & 1977 have Saturday dates on them but you could buy the magazine before this date, as I always did from Eddie the magazine and book seller at Plough Lane on a Thursday.

Swindon was a Saturday night track, and i always got the Star the Wednesday before the Mail was on a Thursday.

Thanks for confirming Sid! I do recall that when White City ran a few Tuesday nights the news in 'The Star' was almost a week old when I used to buy it at Wood Lane!

I think Steve mine would be a day late sometimes and i would be gutted because of a Bank Holiday.!!!

Today's generation don't know how lucky they are. Back then news wasn't so forthcoming and readily available as it is now and to check a result you either had to tune into Radio Luxembourg or pick up the morning paper hoping that the results were covered. 'The Star' was the bible and filled in all the details of the last week and any serious fan couldn't do without it.

Thanks to everyone who has viewed my post and in particular I'm very grateful to Robbie B for the information/dates he has provided.

I've had a quick look on ebay and I've found a copy of the magazine dated 5th November 1977. However, I can't find one dated 2nd November 1976 but there are copies dated 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th November 1976. Can Robbie B please recheck the date on his copy and advise whether it is in fact one of the four that I've

listed?

Thanks and kind regards.

Paul

Hi the date is 27 November 1976.

I have a image of the cober that I used on my now defunct wimbledon 1976 website that I had and I didn't notice the full date sorry about that.

The mail used to cover Mondays though.

Was the Reading ect) result in there? i loved the Mail can remember cycling to one shop who had it regular and being disappointed sometimes.

It was. I actually used to do the Reading reports at one time (not the results but the article) on a Tuesday morning before faxing them in for the Thursday edition.

I had no involvement whatsoever with the club and just decided to do it because there was never a Reading article in Speedway Mail (this is early 90s). It was easy because just by attending on a Monday evening I was always a step ahead of Speedway Star.
