What If....

Excellent post. And a pity they couldnt see the wood from the trees

It makes me laugh. They call themselves "Promoters", but how often do you actually see these so called Promoters actually out and about promoting there club and the sport we love. Its always an appeal to the faithful fans to bring your work mates along friends and family, but there is very little or no advertising anywhere around the towns or villages in a 10-20 mile radius.

In the summer there are banger racing meetings in the nearest town to me which is about 15 miles away, and there are always posters up everywhere in shops, pubs,

and such like, and I made a few enquiries to ask if they had been given any free tickets as they were advertising the event, and all said no, they were just happy to help advertise something that might help bring people to the area. So you don't always have to give away free tickets to try and up your gates, just needs them to get out there and spread the word, and keep doing it.

I'm dam sure if it was my business I would be out there 24/7, doing whatever I could to increase the exposure and my footfall, even if I did cost me a few free tickets

They're not all like that.

Read the Isle of Wight thread on this forum or go to their face book page to see what they are doing.

I was over there last summer and on a bus trip from Sandown to Ryde (about 6 miles) saw 5 posters or banners advertising the speedway.

True, its a holiday area so you might expect nothing less. But I can assure you that Eastbourne, for example, do nothing of the kind.

Whatever tactical they use it falsifies the scores, at least with the double points system the riders get their alloted rides and we don't get the top men having heat 8 races against easy opposition. I would not have double point tactical but the chance to change gate positions when 6 down ...

What a stupid promoter he was/is!!!

Was...

'ex person' sadly as well as 'ex promoter'...

The first School I had mentioned it to had a Head who was an ex 1970/80's Coatbridge/Glasgow fan so knew the Sport existed but had never been to his 'local track' where he currently worked..

He was very keen to make it a real 'School outing' and was willing to lay on coaches there and back for a nominal £1 per person. (I had raised over £500 for his Summer Fete in my store so he felt it was the least he could do)!

He wanted to use the outing to build school spirit and reward attendance, (every kid with a 100% attendance would ride with their family on the coach for free)..

With the track being a Friday night one at the time, there were no 'up for school the next day' barriers, and the majority of the kids were Secondary schools kids anyway..

Hundreds of teenage kids at a Speedway Meeting? We don't want that do we?

just to throw my 10 cents in, as a promoter and hopefully shed some light about what we do and why.....

Firstly, we partner with all printed media... In our case, Isle of Wight County Press (we have weekly reports and paid for advertising), the Beacon (a monthly magazine with monthly fixtures, an article and a paid for advert), we are in visit IOW magazine for Tourism and then the mainland we work with Gosport Globe and The News (Portsmouth) - I am working on Southampton but its a challenge so any help gratefully received.

Then we move to radio... we partner with IOW Radio (Reports, competitions, interviews and paid advertising), Wave 105 (Reports, interview and competitions) and Vectis Radio (reports, interviews and competitions).

Then we go socially using FB and Twitter... we run videos, competitions, very regular news updates, and feedback is always welcome

Then our media channel with Speedway Portal - we have a full media hub with all our radio, TV, video, written reports in one place....

Then our website... information, news and updates,

Then our own printed media.... Leaflets, pop up banners, posters, printed banners..... priceless and works.

Then we do shows...last year we attended 90% of the shows, fates, and other events on the Island, we also did the Celebration of Speedway. We will do more shows this year....this was a big success for us and works

We attend events at our stadium.... when the stadium is used for another event we always ask to put a speedway display out... its always welcomed...this works...

We have the wandering weslake.... Peter, one of our team, walks up and down the beach pushing his weslake.... answering questions... this works....

We also do supermarkets... Tesco and Morrisons so far... we will get more... this works, we proved it....

We promote other attractions and they promote us.... this works, we proved it.

Then we run competitions.... for example... crazy ways to deliver a leaflet... last year we had someone on horseback doing it... this works, we proved it and we got so much media out of it...

We run - bring my class... where kids can bring all their class, scout group, cadets... to speedway with their parents for free... It works, we proved it last year.

We give away tickets for any community event on the island. .... this works, we proved it.

We have competitions with our sponsors to give away tickets to their customers... this works, we proved it

The Warrior 100... is a huge success... 1000 of views of our weekly live draw (still numbers available)

We do tractor cam, bowser cam and any other cam that we can use to promote the club live in the build up to race day

The Warrior Way... is a huge success of people buying in to what we believe it.... if you have not experienced it, it is really quite amazing...

My First Skid.... Get the kids, adults, grand parents... anyone on the track riding a bike....

We try to promote every way that we can.... we sponsor other clubs events for example... this year it is Darcy's meeting... last year it was Leicester Easy Riders Races Jackets and a meeting in the USA

This year on April 20th we will do the Bryn Williams Celebration and it is a free to the public speedway meeting... so please come and experience the Warrior Way and NL racing.

Now I dont claim to have every answer... and as you can see we do a lot of things and it is really tiring to do it....but I can tell you this... I am committed, I lead the team with Martin Widman where we do all roles with our helpers, each job is as important as the next, we are always positive, we want to meet people and listen to them - they may have a great idea... my team is confident in themselves and their roles - we value them...For example.... I would rather have a committed person who makes a mistake than a non committed person who isnt really interested but makes no mistakes.... everyone has a voice and it is my job, along with Martin, to filter their voices to make the best direction we can take the club in while staying within budget.

I also totally believe in our product... we add value to our sponsors, our community, the economy and peoples well being... I can prove it. I totally believe in fan interaction and the all round show of speedway... not just racing... it is a show with us... and I am totally committed to improving the show each week. For sure we will have a problem from time to time but that is life... nothing is ever perfect and we work to improve and build upon the Warrior Way. We also believe in the family experience... we want families to feel comfortable with us, and this includes pricing and entertainment. Children with us are free to all our events (except MFS and then its only £30), we introduced young adult pricing 17 - 20 this year so I will report back to you. We also increased our season tickets by 50% this year.... small steps I know...

Finally..... We value everyone who makes the speedway on the island work... last season our gates increased each week.... we value all our fans, our team, the riders and we value sponsors, who I have to say we work equally as hard with.... last year we retained 95% of our sponsors.... but promotion is time consuming, can be costly (radio and papers), but it also creates a team and a self belief when you see it work and the more it works, the more the self belief grows and the bigger your crowds become.... oh, and I absolutely love this and I know people do too... I know we change peoples lives.. sounds crazy but look on our FB pages... it means so much to us all and even though Martin and I lead the team that support us are amazing, confident, part of the club, and valued...

If you think he's enthusiastic on here, you should meet him in person................. :D

The thing is, though, is that getting people through the turnstiles is just half the story. Its no good wrapping a dog turd in a shiny wrapper - one bite and no one will buy it again.

The product simply has to be good enough to make them come again..............and again..............and again. That's principally about the speedway, but its also about everything else that happens on race nights.

Thing is, Isle Of Wight get that right, too. Reading my updates from last season, I enjoyed every meeting I went to. More than that, there is a huge focus on customer care - you really get the feeling that you are valued, being listened to and that your opinions count (the very fact that Barry takes the time to come on here says an awful lot - most regard the BSF with contempt, spite, hatred or all three) . They just go that little bit further and its why they deserve every success.

Perhaps the most important thing is that what they do is not expensive, its not rocket science and its not difficult - its simply putting a bit (or maybe a lot) more effort in. As such, every track in the country could do it.

I might be speaking the 'bleeding obvious' now, but I am huge fan of what Barry, Martin and their troop of helpers are doing and regard it as a blueprint for the rest of the sport.

I'd recommend that everyone give them a try in 2017 to see how they operate, I'll be surprised if you are disappointed.

No doubting this promotion promote their product, all promotions do some of the above and obviously some have more time to put into their clubs than others.

I do hope all the promoters discuss best practice at their conference, they could get so much from one another .....

The above link is for 2017 and still indicates double points for tactical rides.

Thank you very much ff. :t:

i stand corrected i thought they got rid of it

Thanks for building my hopes up.  ;):)

Get down to the nearest National League track - they did away with double points nonsense.

Perhaps you could tell me which is the nearest Track to Sunderland Richard?

Fantastic to hear, and I wish you all great success.

Just reading your post you can tell how much passion you have for the sport and your club. A big thumbs up from me

I just wish there were more promoters like yourself out there.

Il admit I haven't been to watch racing on the island for 5 years, due to mainly living 3 hours from Southampton but just by reading your post I will definitely be crossing the water this season, if only for a couple of odd meetings as it sounds like your doing as much as you can for the fans and you deserve the reward.

Best of luck for the season :t:

Rewarding a family for a son/daughter getting a 100% attendance at school with free tickets for the transport to Speedway/admission, just won't work now...

It descriminates against pupils who don't have a 100% attendance record! And we know that schools cannot use the term "loser" now, it's now PC to say winners and "Runners Up" so everyone would have to be given the prizes....

Thank you very much. And I'm already looking forward to my visit.

I'm hoping I might be able to fill the car, so we can have a pensioners night or two away to add to the fun.

Keep up the good work, and I really hope, you continue to get the right results on and off the track.

My lads School pays for those with 100% attendance to go on a trip at the end of the year...

Alton Towers, that kind of thing...

You also can only go on other 'educational days out' if you have over 93% attendance...

This system brought in by the Headmaster when he started 4 years ago has helped move the overall School attendance from 90% to over 96%...

No 'everyone gets rewarded for being average' in his School. Winners are heralded as an inspiration to others...

There is hope....

Anyways, back to the IOW...

Barry Bishops contribution should be printed off by every track in the land and stuck on their office wall...

I sincerely hope all the hard work delivers long term success to the club.

One thing is for sure, if it doesnt, those in charge can look themselves in the mirror and know they have done everything they could to make it a success..

Again, (this time for British Speedway), with people like this in the Sport..

There is hope...

Like twk I hate the double points although it doesn't stop me attending. How many times though do you watch a meeting and the double points brings the scores closer and you think that's good it's a closer meeting now but I hope the team who used the tactical doesn't win. So, what's the bleeding point

And of course in reality the most points a team can gain in a double up v normal points is 3 i.e.an 8-1 v 5-1 and given that the facility is available only in 8 heats it hardly dominates proceedings.

That said I would sooner see team mangers being allowed to have three Tactical substitutes with no doubling of points if their team is 6 or more points behind after all riders have had at least one ride up to and including heat 13. Riders being allowed only to be used once as a TS.

Shocking that the SRBF Bonanza meeting should pull in only 1,200 people at Glasgow. Considering the Glasgow promotion are genuinely on top of publicity there, is there a serious appetite for speedway anywhere in the UK?

Glasgow for all it's finery is still too far away for the bulk of supporters, the line-up wasn't exactly brilliant either.

I know we change peoples lives.. sounds crazy but look on our FB pages... it means so much to us all and even though Martin and I lead the team that support us are amazing, confident, part of the club, and valued...

Great work Bazza, on holiday on the island mid-JUne, hoping to attend the Kent match. Was there a few years ago v. Newport, friendly but small crowd, about 200. Liked that little stand, and not too serious like Elite League Swindon.

What size crowds are you getting? Shame you're separated from Pompey and Soton by that expensive stretch of water.

Young Anders Rowe who has signed for Kent should be riding in that meeting as he will be 15 by then.

Hey... great to hear from you... although dont call me Bazza it makes your nose bleed.... ha ha ha ha joking :)

Crowds at the end of last year we around 600... 100 plus of which were kids... we have a target to increase this again this year to we hope hit 1000 regularly.... also we have grown the school - My First Skid massively.

Regards the water - we have a 20% discount with Wightlink and if you book relatively well in advance it is not too bad, and for foot passengers it is around £8 after discount... then we do our bit and provide free taxi service to and from the stadium to ensure you arrive safely, promptly and without charge :)
