Ommer Mon
Yes Brian the planning laws are stacked firmly in the favour of developers. I think it took Barratts 7 attempts to finally get permission to redevelop Dudley Wood but 5 'nos', 1 last minute withdrawal and a single solitary' yes' still ended up as an overall 'yes'. Good luck to all at Oxford. They know they are swimming against the tide butare prepared to carry on doing it for the good of the sport. brianbuck
Yes the system is definitely unfairly biased in favour of big business - Every time Barratt's were refused planning consent to build houses on the Dudley Wood site, they knew that they could just apply again and again until they finally got the decision they wanted, but on the other hand, once the planning inspector had over-ruled Dudley Council and approved the application, there was no scope for a counter-appeal. I suggested this in a letter of complaint I sent to the planning inspector and he was much affronted by the suggestion that big business could pull strings! SteveLyric2
Update in today's Oxford Mail which sounds a lot more positive!!! Forming a 'Social Enterprise' with Oxford Council to bring back speedway and greyhounds (and presumably anything else that the facility could cope with)?! Rumours from the Swindon thread that Stadia UK's greyhound stadium manager Bill Glass has been spotted looking at the Oxford facilities??!! Stoke Potter
Reading the comments below that Oxfordmail article tells me the first thing you need is to educate some locals. You have a councillor (Linda Smith) spouting off that she's surprised people want it back because it's noisy! Someone should send her some professional info on the noise reduction that has been implemented in recent years in the sport. This is the sort of thing the BSPA should do but obviously that won't happen. You also have people commenting that it's polluting. Again some education about Methanol being clean burning/none polluting would be appropriate. For once Speedway is light-years ahead in that regard so it should play to that strength. Best of luck to everyone involved, I hope you get the Cheetahs back soon! Edited March 4, 2017 by Stoke Potter
bruno
The image speedway has compared to reality are now miles apart, the dust is nowhere like it used to be and as for the noise it's like listening to lawn mowers going round. Trouble is those not in the know still think of it as noisy and dirty. I miss the noise but it's never going to return to that but unfortunately that's still the image it has

That's the trouble with the green brigade now...always going to be a problem trying to introduce or re-introduce speedway where there are houses in the vicinity. Guest
The situation in regard to permission for a speedway return to Oxford could well rest as to how many people actually living in the area of the stadium want a return bearing in mind that many of them will not and thus raise the issue of noise. And pursue that opinion with some resolve most probably. Opposed to the opinion of people living near to the stadium will be the opinion of those who do not live locally but will travel from a distance to be spectators. At the end of the day - think carefully as to who will have the stronger case? Edited March 4, 2017 by Guest
The White Knight
Great for Oxford but that would be curtains for Swindon but as long as your happy You surprise me hagonshocker - could you please explain your remark. I just don't understand why the two Teams can't run together. Unless it is geographical and Oxford is too close to Swindon for the area to support two Tracks. They seemed to run together years ago. Humphrey Appleby
Unless it is geographical and Oxford is too close to Swindon for the area to support two Tracks. The point is that it increasingly appears that feet are being dragging on building the replacement stadium at Swindon.

poole keith
the simple reasoning is that both swindon and oxford are or were both principally dog tracks and there are now not enough dogs around to support racing at both tracks(remember around 100 dog tracks have closed in the last 30 yrs) so unfortunately it would be swindon or oxford tragically not both
cityrebel
You are right about the shortage of dogs. Wimbledon haven't been able to fill a full race card for ages. Both speedway and greyhound racing are sports in decline.
Steve Shovlar
Dont get it. How long does it take to knock up a few dogs? A couple of years before they are old enough to race?
dontforgetthefueltapsbruv
Dont get it. How long does it take to knock up a few dogs? A couple of years before they are old enough to race?using a Speedway analogy - the dog has to come from the right stock (bike/engine manufacturer) and the better ones cost more. You need the right kennells (workshop) and training (tuning) and food/consumables (fuel/tyres) again the best cost more. If crowds are falling and costs are rising (applicable to both) then thats why less breed/compete (buy bike/race) which means fewer tracks are viable (applicable to both) Just breeding a few mongrels wouldnt automatically mean more tracks are viable.
A ORLOV
What is that supposed to mean? Sorry for being pleased to potentially see another team return to the sport! What's that got to do with Swindon? Because GI could use the excuse of having a track at Oxford would mean that they would not have to build the new one at Swindon. They are dragging their heels at Swindon and nothing is happening. The main issue would be that only a very few fans who go to Swindon would travel to Oxford, so would Oxford speedway be viable.
poole keith
if speedway ever returns to oxford it will be an oxford team not a swindon team
