When London Had Speedway

This Link carries details of the many tracks/teams that once operated in London - as well as a few that were near enough to be recognised having association towards the capital!

When one analyses the loss, albeit over 79 years, it must be classified as nothing less than a disaster for the sport. The list shows a massive total of 28 tracks/teams. The only survivors are Arena Essex/Lakeside Hammers and Rye House - and not strictly teams within the actual precincts of the capital.

Wembley was indeed a wonderful place for major speedway events - like the World Championship, staged before capacity crowds.

But TBH in its declining years of the 1950s when crowds started to fall away for the basic type of league and cup racing it was a 'miserable experience.' The stadium was far too large and the attendance too small sadly to generate atmosphere for that type of racing.

Oh to be young and single, have money in my pocket and be able to watch racing at West Ham, Wimbledon and Hackney, all in the same week.

Was life great for me in the mid/late 60's?...You bet it was.

My Wembley visits were really good - but - I was far more impressed with the Racing at the old Hyde Road Track. The Racing I saw there was just awsome.

I was at Hyde Road for all of Briggo's BLRC victories and great meetings they were, but for me it had to be Custom House

Mind you TWK, I saw some great meetings at Wimbledon and the two tracks could not have been more different.

A fair and understandable comment on your part customhouseregular. It's amazing how Posts like the one by Sidney the robin can completely deflect away from the actual thread. And isn't Southampton the track were Bert Cro ucher was once captain and then team manager in the 1940s and 1950s? :icon_smile_clown:

My mum used to go FIVE nights a week - in London! Wimbledon (Monday), West Ham (Tuesday), New Cross (Wednesday), Wembley (Thursday), and Harringay (Friday).

Sigh...

When I used to go to Wembley, there were 55,000 members of the supporters club and sometimes there was more that that at a meeting

Could that have been in the seasons immediately after the post-war restart at Wembley then mickthemuppet? I was talking more of the seasons in the mid-1950s prior to the team's departure from the sport.
