The Doctor...
I can't say I've ever of him or find any records of him on rider database , maybe he second half rider ? Me either. Bit of an odd article that. Unless it's trying to draw attention to the alcohol dependency unit, i guess. The racejacket is 77 ish Wolves it seems. moxey63
My records show the name Johnny Rodger appearing in a few meetings during the mid-70s - for Scottish Cubs against the English counterparts at Berwick in September of '74, scoring 5; the 1974 Danny Taylor Memorial at Berwick in May '74 as reserve, scoring 2; and one of Olle Nygren's school events at King's Lynn in March 1975, scoring 5. tyretrax
I think it could be Johny Rodger from Paisley. He bought a bike from someone at Berwick ,or at least picked it up there, and on his first go on it rode it up the carpark and nearly wiped himself, and a car out. Fromafar
I remember him riding at Berwick for a couple of seasons think he rode in the Scottish junior league for Paisley around the same time as The Caffreys and at Coatbridge when the Tigers were there. No superstar but he gave it a go. frigbo
Had a brother called Peter who also rode.
daveallan81
I have him riding in the second half of the Edinburgh v Young Sweden match on 13th April 1979. The following week he was programmed to ride in a junior race. The programme is blank but as this meeting came just 4 days after the Paisley rail crash then it would seem highly unlikely that he took part. From newspaper reports of the time, his sister Sandra Black (22) and her daughter Sharon (4), both of Paisley, were amongst the 7 who lost their lives in the accident. All others killed were male. The young girl pictured with John in the article is named as Emily. Going back a bit further I have a Johnny Rodgers programmed to take part in a Scottish Junior Championship meeting at Coatbridge, October 1974. The meeting was rained off and never restaged. He is programmed (as John Rodgers) in second halves at Newtongrange in 1973. I have no record of him riding in the S.J.L. An Alastair Rodger did appear in 1977. Indeed I'm struggling to find any record of him in Coatbridge/Blantyre second halves. He is programmed to ride in an early season junior heat at Powderhall in 1977. A 1978 Wolverhampton programme has a J. Rogers listed in their 1977 second half points league table, a solitary 4th place being his lot. The caption on the scrapbook picture reads "Johnnie passing on the inside, Mount Gambia 1978." I assume this is in fact Mount Gambier speedway in South Australia. tyretrax
Alister Rodger was not connected to Jolly, as we called him, Rodger. If I remember correctly Kenny McKinna was Alister's Best Man.

crescent girl
Very sad to read of Johnny's plight. He desperately wanted to be a speedway rider, but it wasn't to be. He tried cycle speedway in Glasgow around 1971, then got a speedway bike. He later invested in a new bike, took it to the Coatbridge P&P (1973? 1975?) and broke his leg very badly. Didn't ride again until the next term, but didn't give up. He would surely have tried second-halving at Paisley, too? He definately had rides at Cleveland Park in Middlesborough -- hadn't known about Wolverhampton until now. Not sure about him going to Australia, but thought he'd tried his luck in South Africa about '79/80.
