Sniper to pick of the riders last each lap... Watch how many over takes there are in a meeting then

Especially if they stall at the gate.

has anybody considered how many 'county ambiences', or how many delays might occur, if these sort of rules were implemented ???

its ok coming up with great ideas,,, but at least think them thru first,,,

The riders themselves need to be just as involved in finding the answer to drastically falling attendances on the terraces and they have a big role in ensuring that meetings flow smoothly and heats are run crisply without long unneccessary delays, which are one major factor in turning off fans ( if what we read on here and in the SS is true ). They need to be involved via their own association and by team managers and referees. Another 25% of fans going permanently AWOL is going to hit the riders most of all.

yeah,,, and what happens once the tapes actually do go up ???

It's a work in progress....!!

😨😨

Doesn't anyone feel that part of speedways beauty is the "rawness" of it? Taking away the tapes would be a further sanitisation of the sport... Just be harsher but fair at the start, refs and start marshalls need to grow some bigger balls....

one thing that you can't take away from the starts, is human error.

maybe a 'hawk-eye' thing like they use in cricket, tennis (and maybe other sports) is something that could be used ?

I agree, but it has to be remembered that it is a very dirty area, especially immediately after a start with raw shale being blasted backwards at anything near the tapes. No doubt with anything electronic like a beam from the equipment is going to have to be cleaned throughly very regularly, and presumably you will only know it hasn't worked after the start. Got to be also remembered that tracks sometimes have a problem to getting the bottom of the tape mechanism to stay magnetised to the starter solenoid. Also happens with the sliding solenoid that realises the hook type. These are very basic in design and not very dirt sensitive, but beams and transponders could be a step too far and therefore less reliable.

The starting procedure has always been an issue in the history of speedway. I recall the late Johnnie Hoskins experimenting with boards alongside each rider as they lined up at the start so as to try and stop distractions and produce fairer starts.

I don,t think all of its it's cheating if you have ever tried it ,it's so hard once the green light goes on they look straight focusing on the tapes or magnet a slight movement, twitch even if the wind catches them your dropping that clutch or if you speak to a few riders Green light 1 go lol

Don't know about transponders, but the going back to the pits on a false start seems unnecessary to me , open pit gate, four riders , two minutes, shut pit gate, open the pit gate again when race is finished, for emergencies, or allowing replacement to enter race, no mechanics etc.

Used to hear of riders getting to know the quirks of certain referees and were able to anticipate the starts (even making a note of each referee's system for future reference) Some riders would count One, Two, Three and drop the clutch. Some would drop the clutch as soon as the Green light came on etc...apparently some referees were very predictable!

Is the start of a speedway not part and parcel of the attraction I for one don't want the tapes replaced with some high tech equipment . I understand that people don't want riders gaining unfair advantage but IMO the Ref should be able to cope with this .We now overall have riders sitting still at the start and the rules are far more strict than when I first started watching s/way in the 70's( I am old and loved tape touching but accept the modern rules ) we still need the tension that you see once that green light goes on and how riders react under that enormous pressure .

What needs addressing post haste IMO is the time wasting and continued trips to the pits after false starts etc , unless there is good reason the pit gates should stay closed and if fuel is a issue larger tanks should be fitted .
