New Start Regulations.

Recommended Posts

The FIM has modified the starting regulations for both the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series and the Monster Energy SWC.

Riders who move at the start will be given a warning by the referee and, in a change to the rules, will now be disqualified from a race if they are deemed to have rolled at the tapes at any time during the rest of the meeting. The disqualified rider will be replaced by a track reserve for the heat in question.

thoughts on this?

Personally I think it's a good idea.

Hopefully they will roll it out across all leagues as well.

Given that many "moving at the start" decisions are hotly disputed, it might have been better had they introduced transponders (think that's what the thing is called) first. Cost would be minimal compared to tuning/engine costs etc especially in the GP series.

Other than that it's a good idea.

It could be a good idea but not if all those referees are in charge who we now see pulling back prefectly good starts because they imagine someone must have moved. There lies the road to unfair disqualifications, lots of controversy and delays whist riders make their complaints.

It's 2017, time for a foolproof system using modern technology which will instantly identify if anyone moves before the tapes are released.

Apologies Star Lady for pretty much repeating what you said. That will teach me to break off partway through a post to have a cup of tea. Your post wasn't there when I started.

shouldn't this be in the GP section as it only relates to FIM sanctioned events.

I shared it here for discussion with regards it being potential talking points for the leagues to adopt.

Have no issue of it being moved if some think it doesn't belong here.

I agree with you SL, transponders would be a better judge of riders moving at the start I would've thought....

Taken from "New Starting Procedures" in title topic The Way Ahead.

A system could be used similar to motor racing. Transponders used to monitor movement, do away with tapes & have an overhead/track canopy 20/25metres down from the start with red lights for ready & then green for go. All the riders are facing forward which eliminates the chance of riders on gates 1 & 4 moving slightly with the riders on 2 & 3 going & getting penalized.

They, also, brought in the 2nd line just behind the start line in 2016 to stop riders from rolling back into the groove to roll them forward as the tapes go up. This was hardly ever enforced as you see from the tv clips at all levels of our sport.

Transponders were trialled a few years ago in conjunction with TAG-Heuer, but they really weren't very successful. There were issues getting them mounted effectively, and consistently.

How hard can it be? Motox have been using them for years, decades even.

They have but they are only used for lap timing really with about 40 riders in a race and mx races last around 20/30 mins and it's used to monitor each lap nothing to do with starts it's pretty hard to jump the starts at Mx as the gates lift up from the ground and all drop towards you at the same time try to jump it your left there with your wheel stuck in the gate

this is trouble waiting to happen.

as mentioned, the riders that anticipate a start (and don't touch the tapes) will be getting warnings and excluded, big problems with referees where there might not be a tv to watch back, and big problems with supporters getting even more frustrated

Place a small hand grenades with the pins removed, each side of the front wheels, right up to the tyres, any movement forward or backwards would release the lever and blow the offending rider to smithereens! Small blast shields would also need to be placed separating the gates so riders complying wouldn't get hit by the flying shrapnel....!!!

Jobs a good un!!!!!
