Exactly How Much Weaker Is This Years League?

Recommended Posts

Exactly?

hmm

some blimin detailed metrics required to achieve..

Where's SCB when you need him!!!

It's just everyone's, well, not everyone, but a good % of posters are... Off the top, can't think of many big names that are not in the top league this season, plus we have another team.....

22.565% is you assume they concerted everyone's average by 1.4 but then had a 50 point limit rather than 42. BUT 42 is not perfect and can actually go up and down a bit based on many things.

About 20% weaker seems fair.

About 20%.....

and there you go. Someone agrees!

I think it is not any weaker as that depends on what you mean by "weaker". If it means less attractive, without some top stars - yes it is. But I think the riders listed so far means that it may well be better / closer racing and that is what speedway desperately needs if it is ever going to attract and hold onto new supporters. Fingers crossed.

To answer the title of the tread : What does it matter how weak the teams are, We want to see competitive racing of a quality we can afford. All the off-season has been taken up with problems created by the lack of finance and the trouble clubs are having running their club, It is obvious some posters don't understand, WE CANNOT AFFORD THE TOP RIDERS ANY MORE. they want more than the sport can afford to pay.

I'm looking forward to the new season with most teams of an acceptable standard. So what if we the teams aren't filled with top names, we will be watching riders who want to race here. This year could actually be very good where the so called standard will be overlooked by the quality of racing it produces......

surely "weaker" means less strong. And SCB has inidciated that the quality of rider has dropped by around 20%, which seems about right.

Personally, i think the racing will be less close than last year. Firstly, you have some number 7s who are considerably weaker than any 2016 EL rider. Secondly, the much maligned EL heat format of the last couple of seasons did - most of the time - throw similarly matched riders against each other every heat. This was evidenced in the grouping of riders in the 5-7 point average range, as in any given heat pretty much anyone could beat anyone. That wont be the case this year.

I also don't see the teams being more evenly matches this year than last year, there ar stong looking teams (relatively speaking) and some weak ones.

I was hoping for a list of top riders, or rather the better riders that aren't coming back this season.... Rather than a mathematical equation sort of answer... That's all, although a % answer is interesting, physical names of missing talent is more tangible..

You also have riders like Richie Worrall, Justin Sedgman and Stefan Nielsen. Maybe not "stars" but riders that have been forced out while lesser riders come into teams. It probably has more of an effect on riders like this than it does the top riders who, probably, aren't so bothered anyway as they can get regular rides in stronger leagues.

The answer is; it is weaker. However I have always believed that for British Speedway to survive it had to find its level here. There is simply not the numbers coming through the turnstiles to sustain teams with 1-7 top riders; like the European Leagues. What we have now is a bone fide League structure that offers up the possibility of promotion and relegation creating another interest for us all.

We will still be watching some very competitive racing at PL/CL tracks this season. I made a hypothetical point on the Leicester thread just now about Scunthorpe v Leicester being far from done deal for the Lions. Indeed the Scorpions would win the EWR leg in my book.

To me its a bit like turning the clock back to 1965 and the British League formation where 20+ tracks; aided by Rider Control I grant you; arrived at a balance amongst the teams. I understand the point about losing some of the bigger names; but we have a very productive National League/Youth structure here that is managing to feed into the PL/CL and out of that we create new British 'stars'. The best way for the rider to learn is for them to be actively racing in these leagues and then 2-3 years down the line your not looking at these lads as make weights; no they're bone fide competitors.

Now we have committed to this re-launch of League racing we have to resist the desire to revert to the old structure. I think that a more cooperative administration of the Leagues was needed to secure the immediate; medium and long term future of the sport on this Island.

Watching the elite league on sky was awful Last year. Watching the so-called heat leaders and draft riders racing each other two or three times a meeting was boring.

Hopefully newbies will see more British riders on the TV making name's for themselves which inturn will bring in more sponsorship. When I first watched speedway on sky I would be rooting for the team that had the most Brit's. What's the point in having a British team with seven riders you can't even pronounce. We need to bring in new fans and they won't care if this crop of riders are 2 seconds slower then the top guys in the gp's are!!

So looking forward to watching riders riding for their teams and not just the money (which isn't a lot )
