Richard Green deserves a name check. It seemed like there wasn't a week went by at Exeter in the late 80s/early 90s when he either produced a last bend overtake or was involved in a spectacular crash. Plenty of opponents thought him a nutter. They were probably right, but he was a cult hero in Devon.

I recall a story that one rider (Eastbourne) was 'out to get him' after an incident when they had earlier met?

Seems the wilder a rider is , the more entertaining he becomes . I never considered Richard Green a nutter , very good rider , but not a nutter . But I never saw him round the County Ground . Jason Lyons ,when he started at Glasgow , was definitely out of control a lot of the time , but also very exciting to watch . Likewise Jesper Olsen , when he arrived at Shawfield , made almost weekly visits to the ambulance .

I remember when Ipswich rode there 91 or 92 not sure but 3 of our riders ended up in hospital Norris and Standing in particular out for a length of time due to the home riders pretty much being out of control and Green was one of those.

Always remember Jamie Habbin when he rode for Peterborough..............' The track is dangerous, the riders are dangerous and if they ever decide to bulldoze the place let me know i will be first in line'

did i say that?? Was merely quoting a line from a rider.

Mark Loram rode down there and enjoyed his time there saying that although the track was awful , many riders bottled it before they even came to the tapes

Yes I remember that match. As I recall, Ipswich were a team of rising stars - Louis and Loram I think were also in the team. But they were given a rude awakening from some pretty robust riding from the likes of Greeny and Andy Sell. All very enjoyable from the right side of the fence.

Mark had left Ipswich by then. Louis , Norris and Dean Standing plus Moggo were the main riders

Jason Lyons was one of the very best visitors to the County Ground when riding there with Glasgow. I recall him overtaking Greeny on the last bend, which took some balls and I don't remember seeing anyone else do that at Exeter.

My mistake. There was still a huge contrast between the rising stars of Ipswich and the pretty unfashionable lot we had! :-)

My great entertainers were old-time riders Eric Chitty, Howdy Byford and Dennis Newton. And they were entertainers in full definition of the words in the period between the late 1930s to probably the mid 1950s.

They used to go on to the centre green mike and entertain the crowd by singing to them. Chitty was an especially talented vocalist and in the late 1930s even made several records. Newton added to his vocal talents by accompanying himself on the guitar.

Yes - REAL entertainers in my opinion.

According to Wikipedia, Malcolm Brown also had a talent for singing as well another realms entertainment.

I am fairly certain that Roy Peacock, who rode at Belle Vue and Liverpool at one time, left the sport to concentrate on a vocal and musical career. I am not sure but think he is still alive and JUST maybe now known as Roy Chappell? I DO STAND BY TO BE CORRECTED ON THIS COMMENT!!!
