briggo
Just a quickie...............I've often wondered how you pronounce Steady Eddie's surname............... I can hear dear departed Dave Lanning's 'Jan-carts'...............and I've heard other commentators with 'Jan-sash'..............or should it be 'Yan-carts' perhaps Any takers? The White Knight
A great Rider back in the day. I've always understood it was Yan-carts. I stand to be corrected though.

steve roberts
A very classy rider who I got to see quite often when I used to visit White City following 'The Rebels' and Wimbledon and its riders were regular visitors. Can not for the life of me remember how his name was pronounced however!
iris123
Remember years ago asking a Polish woman who i worked with how you pronounce the name and am fairly sure she pronounced it along the lines of Jan-sash Right at the beginning here you hear the commentator say his name twice and it sounds like Jan-sash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G16hwlTvUg Edited January 25, 2017 by iris123

iris123
I was of course going by the continental way of saying Jan anyway.Jan Steachmann is also spoken as yan, rather than the British style Jan,short for Janet etc Edited January 29, 2017 by iris123
norbold
Yes, a Polish speedway fan and friend of mine always says Yan-sash.

iris123
Right at the beginning here you hear the commentator say his name twice and it sounds like Jan-sash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G16hwlTvUg Then again i got to thinking and wondered if this guy was a bit different.I thought about foreign people looking on youtube at clips of Mick Channon saying "Line-acre" and telling their mates how to pronounce it,as they heard it from an english commentator

Steve PS Don't forget PC's Henrik "Gustafferson"... Yes I cringe at Briggo's continual use of the name 'Saunders' when assisting Dave Lanning during the post-recorded commentary of the 1974 British Final...a meeting that Briggo took part in!
