Championship Teams Comparison Time

Recommended Posts

With only Peterborough and Edinburgh to complete their teams, perhaps now is the time to start comparing teams.

At the moment for me P/boro, Ippo, Redcar and Newcastle stand out. My own team Berwick will be a real dark horse, has potential to do really well, but, it all depends on say which Bridger do we get same goes for Vissing, the rider to look oot for in Berwicks team is Dimitri Berge

I think it all looks very competitive, helped by the fact Plymouth have dropped out and the Redcar have stepped up - the two usual dunces of the class are not around.

For me the stand out looks like Ipswich, but I think there are some strong top 5s. It may come down to who has a reserve who steps up from nowhere - everyone will be strong at home from what I can see.

Easy way to do this is rate every rider 1 to 10 for each position and team with the lowest number has the best chance of winning. This is just my attempt and not a bad way of doing this. So best number 1 is Cook and he gets rating of 1 for example.

This would suggest Sheffield, Ipswich and Glasgow as a top three. Have to wait to see what Edinburgh do. This is just a guess at what would happen and how I rate riders. Please everyone else have a go.

Going to be an interesting season, I do tend to prefer teams in depth, so would be biased towards a strong reliable top 5 riders, being able to carry 2 potentials at No6 & No7. However if a team as very good top 3 and the best 2 reserves, then all you need in the 2nd strings is being reliable and steady

So you rate the British Champion as the third best number 1 in the league??

Anyway this year only 2 teams stand out which is us (Ipswich) and Sheffield with Glasgow and Newcastle just behind.

Dont think the league looks competitive as those 4 look far ahead of the others.

My table would be:

1. Ipswich

2. Sheffield

3. Newcastle

4. Glasgow

5. Redcar

6. Edinburgh

7. Peterborough

8. Workington

9. Berwick

10. Scunthorpe

Omitting Edinburgh and assuming Peterborough line up as people are saying my view is

1. Glasgow

2. Ipswich

3. Sheffield

4. Redcar

5. Peterborough

6. Newcastle

7. Berwick

8. Scunthorpe

9. Workington

Edinburgh likely to be around 4/5/6

Majority of people will have that same top 3.

I agree that Workington look shocking. When they come to Ipswich they will struggle to get 35 i reckon. Last year Roynon , Campton and Williamson managed 4 points between them and only beat their team mates and were miles behind. Jorgensen looked ok and Cook will score loads but is the weakest Workington team ive seen i think which is a shame as good bunch of fans

Must admit there is some great teams, and more equal than I have seen before. There was always 2 or 3 who didn't try to get the best team for their own reasons but this year, i think practically every team has made the effort, and the result will be some exciting meetings and close racing. It will be interesting to compare the fortunes of the top heavy side against the stronger reserves side scenarios. Hope injuries don't decide anything but give us a close run league with many teams still in it for the playoffs.

Not disappointed the Championship is down to 10 teams especially as, for the good of speedway, a couple of sides have went up to bolster up the Premiers League.

All in all, i think we are in for a cracking season, and I hope it brings back some old and new fans to see it. The averages and match formats have been cleaned up, and things are very much more stable for future developments.

Bring it on.

We've been touted as one of the top teams pre-season for the last 2/3 years, that's never gone to plan has it. Maybe underdog or dark horse status may do the trick :D

I think quite a few of our riders will improve on their average next year, with Ty Proctor surprising a lot of people.

I certainly think they are better than some might suggest.

Cook can beat anyone, anywhere, Proctor can put a couple of points on his average and Williamson is one of the stronger reserves.

Sheffield for me.
