Guest
I have a pretty big collection of the speedway Mail and i did prefer it to the Star some of the action pictures were superb. Was searching through my 1974 editions i needed a couple of Bob Paulson pictures to complete one of my memorabilia books. I found this picture of Paulson/Valentine with Ballard of Oxford on the front cover a superb picture. Modesty prevents me mentioning who had a freelance editorial role with 'Speedway Mail' between about early 1973 until 1983. 'Speedway Mail' was also very much the training ground for Tony McDonald's entry into speedway journalism. Something wrong here Sidney the robin: the first quote is nothing to do with me but somehow appears to be? I think you have posted your response (highlighted by me) in the wrong place. Not to worry - it's not the end of the world and these sort of things can happen easily. Kind regards. Tsunami
It's a very simple idea...made complicated by the likes of you and others reasoning. It's a good reflection of how speedway is tbh...think of a simple idea, then find reasons why it won't work and make it as complicated as possible. Seems certain people just want to be negative and find reasons for ideas not to work. It's hardly ground breaking...printing a blank score card in SS...what is so wrong with that idea? It's not taking anything away from SS and just providing another option for the fan. Why all the negativity? We've got programmes...we got blanks to print...why not a third option...why is that so hard for some people to think it's positive? What harm is there? The usual answer from you every time some doesn't agree with your brilliant suggestions, and gets accused of negativity and accusing others of making it complicated it is YOU who are suggesting the change and others are not. Gresham
See I never knew it was "banter, well if that is the case -why don't you wind your neck in and stop talking a load of guff you utter eejit. “banter” Now that's more like it...funnily my 'guff' of which you talk, is actually appreciated by a few others. It's not my fault you can't read plain English and understand the sentiment of posts and the reasoning. Your programmes must be a right state... It must be really lonely sat in your Ivory tower judging everyone else's thoughts. Anyway...keeping tugging away at your smugness...must be a real turn on for you. You started the plural's mate, when you said 'no one'...instead of 'I' or 'yourself'. You may not like the idea...but others might, and do. I really don't understand why you've got your knickers in a twist over this tbh. It's not going to effect you. You have a choice to purchase whatever you want. We've got past not 'not producing a programme', which you didn't like the idea of. I suggested all three be available. I really can't see how this is bothering you so much. Yes, I meant to , because no one, not one person could surely get so giddy over a like on a forum – but it turns out that person does actually exist… I don't have my "knickers in a twist" it is "banter" remember.... remember... you call people stupid because they have a differing opinion from you on a public form, forums where people debate and disagree...or in your case, get to call each other "stupid" etc and just say it's "banter"....remember, your words...."stupid". It's been emotional Banter I am “on about” you calling a poster (me) stupid – for no reason – if there was a reason, it seems to because I dared take the time to debate the point with you and point out the flaw in your idea of scrapping programmes (as others did) something you then later went against yourself (scrapping programmes, which you then wanted to bring back again - easy to see why some, not just me, were left a bit confused by your thought process) – that was all I engaged in, nothing more, nothing less…that resulted in you, who had complained of “aggressive” posters referring to a poster (me) as “stupid” but claimed it to be “banter”..why you chose that terminology I do not know, as there was no logical reason to do so, it wasn't merited given the general tone of the conversation...you just got a bit uppity when it was pointed out to you people could pretty much already do what you were suggesting, your "3 ideas". I then pulled you on this "stupid/banter" thing, made comparable comment re you being, a bit of an arse - just to show easy it is to illogically slag and abuse people and claimed it as “banter” and since then you have shown yourself as a brass necked hypocrite ….it just makes you look a bit, well.... stupid. At least you have set a precedent though...fair game for people to call you whatever they wish, it is "banter" after all I am sure you will reply, you need the last word on everything ya bumptious wa nk Edited December 9, 2016 by Minor Interest

Engaging in debate is one thing...but you can only do that with people who are intelligent enough to debate over the period of a thread. It's about listening and taking things on board, and debating or agreeing to disagree. I've explained my 'backtrack' on the programme idea. Because you and others still like to buy them. I personally don't. As I've explained so many times...to which you don't seem to understand... I don't want a programme and I don't want the hassle of printing one myself. Hence the idea of printing one in SS...as I and others would use it, plus read it, which I don't with a programme. Instead of understanding that...you just want to hold onto the fact that I said I'd scrape programmes. Which with discussion with you...I've agreed is a good idea to keep. The problem is....so many posters on here, don't actually read posts properly or actually understand concepts. You can't get your head around it being printed in SS, and the other dimwit, was banging on about riders names being printed etc...how can you discuss or debate with stupid...it's impossible. Your reasoning is absolutely nuts...cuckoo... you say Quote... 'you just got a bit uppity when it was pointed out to you people could pretty much already do what you were suggesting, your "3 ideas".' Well they can't...you can do 2 of them. The third suggestion was so you didn't have to print your own out or buy a programme that you thought was not value for money. The reasoning is...you get value for money with the SS, as it's a good read, plus an opportunity to fill in a race card at a meeting...all in the same package. Now why you or anyone else can't understand that is beyond comprehension. You might not think it's a good idea...but that's your prerogative. However...I and others do. So for the last time...all I'm saying, is that all three options could easily be made available, of which 2 already are. It's very simple...I can't explain it any simpler than that. AlanF
Clearly no way the tracks are ever going to be happy with printing a generic race card as it will obviously take away revenue. One possible application would be for Speedway Star to have a race card for the following week's Sky meeting. Still not sure it would be viable but may be of interest to a large number of Star readers without taking income away from tracks.
bigcatdiary
Agreed...but if programme sales are the difference between a Club running or not, then I'd say British Club Speedway is totally broke. If people want to save money, they can already print out race cards online. Printing a race card in the SS wouldn't have an influence on programme sales substantially, as the option is already out there. However...it might increase SS sales if it was printed. I'd rather spend the money I've saved on a programme, on an extra beer. I wonder what earns the biggest profit...the beer or the programme? Interestingly enough I have had this discussion with our programme compilers several times and they insist sales are always a lot more when teams in riding order are not given out by club press releases, doesn't make any difference to me I have used an iPad programme for matches for a few years but my wife gets a programme by virtue of her season ticket. Our promotion gets nothing from the concessions as it's all organised by our Showground landlords, which is why beer, drinks and food are pricey.
Humphrey Appleby
All this arguing about programmes just sums up the old fashioned thinking in the sport. Other motor sports have moved to live timing and apps to follow the action. Whilst I used to like filling in programmes, surely it's possible to develop and charge a few quid for an app that can download team lineups and then show the results? F1 charges a fortune for their app, and people pay it.

iris123
So it seems the idea has been confirmed as total wonk. It obviously will take revenue away from clubs and any money saved and spent on beer will go to the stadium owner, not the speedway club. Can we file this away with the concrete starting area idea now?
