cityrebel
In the 1940's & early 50's did any team apart from harringay ride with blue and yellow quarters on their race jacket. The reason I ask, is I have two original plastic badges from that period with the colours reversed but with no logo on the jacket.
Chadster
I've seen a black and white picture of an Ipswich team in quarters but hard to say what the colours were, but blue seems likely to have been one of them. Sheffield rode in blue and yellow quarters in the late 60s and may have done so earlier.

BOBBATH
Apropos ( I like that word-is it a word?) of the preceding photo of Sheffield Tigers, I gotta say my favorite Sheffield race jacket of all time was the one used in 1965 of a square within which was a fierce looking tiger face-see Speedway Star front cover of June 16th 1965 (Jack Kitchen and Dick Fisher featured, shaking hands on what was obviously a very cold day). I always looked forward to seeing Sheffield as visitors to Newport and was also privileged to visit Owlerton on a few occasions. Great stadium, great track, great people, great team... cityrebel
that's the jacket, but the problem is my badges are definitely 1940's/50's. I reckon they must be harringay minus the wheel.
The White Knight
Jim Airey - That brings back happy memories of the still much missed Sunderland 'Saints'. My favourite Rider at the time. I was new to it all then. Happy days.
nw42
That photo got me reminiscing while sat here, can remember that team well and had many Thursday evening trips over to the wrong side of the Pennines via Woodhead, my dad driving like a lunatic to get us there for the first race. Always loved going to Owlerton, the pits were so much more accessible than @ Hyde Rd, on the odd occasion that we got there early we would always go for a look over the low wall/fence into the pits, it reminded me of a stable rather than a pit area. Of course the racing there was nearly always top notch and the crowds were good. on a side note, I've always thought Bob Paulson wore glasses but he isn't wearing them in that photo, anyone confirm? BOBBATH
Re the preceding-yup Sheffield was a great venue and great track, close to the pits you could talk to the riders, many very approachable- I recall a British semi-final in 1968 and chatting to Dave Younghusband. Just got off my ass and got the program(doesn't everyone wish they'd kept all their meeting programs!!). I see it was 27th June 1968 , Dave ended up with 9 pts.-not sure how many qualified for British Final, but the top scorers were Briggs with 14, then Bill Andrew( he was one tough s.o. and Norman Hunter both with 13. Nigel B. was 4th with 11. Looking over the program there were some wonderful riders at that meeting- Vandenberg, Squibb, Harkins etc.etc. Wish there was time travel , then I could go back and see the meeting again!! Anybody else in forumland who was there??

Chadster
The only Sheffield rider I can think of who wore glasses was Dave Baugh.
iris123
on a side note, I've always thought Bob Paulson wore glasses but he isn't wearing them in that photo, anyone confirm? steve roberts
The only Sheffield rider I can think of who wore glasses was Dave Baugh. Bert Harkins when he rode for 'The Tigers' in 1972.

Yes Dave was a tough old rider and had a few runs in with Jack Millen, After a race incident at Berwick he once had his glasses broken by someone in the crowd throwing an object after the race.
