Eastbourne 2017

I still cannot get over the two home match ban. Never in any sport can I recall a similar such thing. A two match ban would have been the two matches this weekend and allowed a replacement in both matches to alleviate the effect on the club who are not responsible for a riders appearance in an individual event.

Now with a change in averages tomorrow dropping Knight from No 1 there will be no guest allowed in the semi final against Kent hugely disadvantaging Eastbourne who will have to go with r/r for Knight. Things were already going to be difficult against an ever improving Kent team and this action will be seen by many speedway supporters as a move by the BSPA to handicap them. If this morning's rain continues and tonight is postponed the same situation will occur in the KO Cup.

Is it too much to ask that the BSPA give a full explanation of their reasoning behind their unique decision, reasonable but of course futile, to ask.

Unfortunately you've asked and answered all the questions. It will be futile to ask for an explanation, this is the bspa and they make it up as they go along, I bet a ban of this type doesn't happen again.

Jake was gutted that he had to miss to NLRC, his notifications to the relevant parties the night before have still resulted in him getting a ban. It was a genuine reason, sized number 1 bike in his first ride, went to change oil on spare bike noticed metal in the oil.

With only 2 engines and only a few hours until the meeting, renting/borrowing was not a option. let's hope the BSPA/SCB can revoke his ban, at least giving him chance to ride next week against Kent.

LOL stupid auto spell. By the success Jake has had this season id imagine his engine us usually pretty sweet.

As for the ban i suspect you are right and he didn't think he would receive one and it does seem a bit petty given that other riders have gotten away with similar/worse offences this year.

I feel it would have made more sense to issue a statement at the start of next season saying any rider who withdraws from the NLRC must have a certified reason.

Its in the rule book and has been for a few years now.

From the 2017 regulations

19.9.4 It is mandatory for riders to appear in the NDL 4TT, NDL BP and NDLRC; riders will be suspended from their next 2 Home Meetings in contravention, subject to MC confirmation.

It is a peculiar time scale for the ban!

Whos in for Wood tonight? And is it Kemp at number 6?

Hopwood riding again, last night for Bailey tonight for wood I think.

Regarding the ban. I would guess that the thought behind banning him from only home matches would be to penalise the club more . If you get a guest in for an Away match you could get in a track specialist which would be to the clubs advantage.

Fair play for pointing that out, clears up a lot of the conspiracy theory's, including myself..

Thanks Jayne, but why penalise the club or is there a rule that says the club is responsible to ensure that riders turn up for individual meetings?

If not then the sensible thing would be to give the club a guest facility in that situation for the banned rider regardless of whether he is no 1. The track specialist argument does not hold up because it is home meetings and no rider of the same average should score better than the man that rides the track all season.

As regards the incident itself from what I have read I have some sympathy for Jake. He was at Belle Vue on the Saturday and would have stayed overnight somewhere to be at Leicester on Sunday rather than driving back to Norfolk through the night and then setting off to Leicester after Lunch . No chance to get his machinery sorted and he even had to be left out of the team due at Cradley the following Wednesday so what was he expected to do. With hindsight he should have turned up and used his second bike for a lap or two before it packed up and then had to retire, that way he would be out of trouble and could collect his travel expenses into the bargain.

He was probably gutted to miss the meeting because what better than to stop off on his way home from B Vue and pick up 7 or 8 points at least and continue on home with an extra pay check.

Thanks for that Jayne.

Has this sanction been applied to other riders in the past ?

I ask, because it would appear that on this thread and the Jake Knight Banned thread it is an 'unknown' rule. I can't really believe that, if it's been in the rule book for a number of years, and given the numbers of riders potentially involved in the 3 events listed, all have appeared.

Thanks for clearing that up Jayne, still don't remember it being given to anyone else with a similar situation, on hindsight he should have been more canny with his excuse, but I'm sure he thought the mechanical issues were reason enough. Edited by gazzac

At least that explains that Eastbourne arent purposely being penalised in terms of Knight missing home meetings. I assume therell be no pairs or fours to see if there is consistency.

Consistency and any bspa rules don't normally go hand in hand, so probably won't be used again.
