martinmauger
1979 World Final......and the World Team Cup 1979 Qual round from Reading...now that was a WET track....lol..........Anyone got a copy of the 1979 WTC final Highlights of the 'splish splash show' you mention are on Youtube, I know cos I've seen it. Now that meeting, and 1977 World Final, were wet meetings....
Terry
I was at the Reading meeting and also the Final but I believe that ITV didn't cover the event because England weren't competing. Â Amazing that White City held the WTC final three times and England weren't in any of them. We had some decent riders in those days as well!

Grand Central
I have the meeting from Reading on DVD, it was the final I was after, but after a lot of phone calls it seems it was never covered by TV There was some sort of industrial action at ITV in September 1979. This meant that the World Final never got onto UK screens and the only versions that knock around seem to have Danish (?) commentary. And, as you say, the WTC Final from White City was not filmed for TV at all, it would seem.

And, as you say, the WTC Final from White City was not filmed for TV at all, it would seem. Â I once saw 1979 World Final on DVD, with foreign commentary, good result obvioulsy, but also worth it to see Kelly Moran hold back Zenon Plech. 'A Hull 5-1' it was described as for some reason (!). As per 1979 WTC Qualy at Reading, the 'race' between Kelly Moran and Gordon Kennett slithering around in the sludge has to be seen to be believed. Re: 1977 World Final (another good result) most, if not all, heats were shown on the same afternoon by BBC's Grandstand & then ITV's World Of Sport. Not at the same time and just as well since VCRs weren't common at that time so while there some repeated heats, I got see most of the meeting.... steve roberts
Would love to see that 79 WTC final, nz speedway's finest hour. If any consolation I was there and it was dramatic, if rather drawn out, meeting. Â I felt that New Zealand were fortunate in the Qualifying Round at Reading as it had become very much of a lottery due to awful conditions but fully deserved their final win. steve roberts
Just watched the last meeting at Wimbledon (not counting the latter days Junior matches held on a very different sized track) which featured teams from Wimbledon, Reading, Poole & Swindon. Unfortunately the weather was abysmal and the meeting had to be abandoned. John Davis, when interviewed, was very scathing of the GRA...too right too! packerman
The last Videos of speedway I owned would be from the Guys that did Wimbledon & Arena Essex in the 1980's. Â One would be a 4TT of Poole, Exeter & Eastbourne at Wimbledon. Wimbledon v Poole from around 1989 I think Wimbledon v Peterborough the same season. I also had Arena Essex v Poole. These were great quality but I leant them to someone but sadly they have now been lost
Gemini
Â Â These were great quality but I leant them to someone but sadly they have now been lost. Â That's so annoying. I hate lending things for that very reason, whether it's books or DVD's. I'm very possessive of things I own.

steve roberts
Watched last night a Junior meeting from 1987 between Oxford and Hackney at Cowley featuring a young Mark Loram...in which Oxford's Jon Surman took him from the back! Brilliant!

steve roberts
 love to find the 1979 wtc qualifier from rain soaked Reading I was there and that was wet Check out the Classic Speedway DVD site run by Jan Staechmann. I'm sure that he has a copy.  Last night watched a 1990 British League encounter between Coventry and Oxford at Brandon in which Oxford won in the last heat. Great stuff but can't stand that Colin Martin's commentary...babbling on constantly! Edited November 20, 2016 by steve roberts
