Leicester Lions 2017

Recommended Posts

Just a question if the talked about fixed race nights Mon/Thur for the Premier league goes ahead and in the past I have read that Sat night is a must to get the supporters in.

Would Leicesters fans turn out in enough numbers on a Thursday if the set nights gave them a regular 1 to7 to support every meeting. With there being no Sat problems the club would have as much chance as any other club getting any rider to sign for them.

Would the club and fans want to stay in the Premier league.

Thanks in advance for your comments

I'd go any day if I was to get to see a genuine contest between a full home team and a full away team, something we've rarely (if ever) seen this season.

I must admit i thought Danny King would do better for Leicester this year, especially in a weaker top division! What do Leicester fans make of his performances this season?

Mostly disappointing although was getting more consistency in his scores in the second half of the season.

As a rider I think he's a bit of a one-trick pony. Needs deeper dirt out wide otherwise he's struggling

2017 league campaign closes with rider replacement used in 21 of 28 league meetings and in each of the last 20 league meetings. Impressive

Not as impressive as White City, who used it for an entire season and won the league.

To think that Leicester once tracked the same seven riders in every meeting for an entire season. How times have changed!

Remember it well ;-)

I went virtually every week and also to Hackney where I lived close to the track just across Hackney Marshes.

It was good to share my loyalties over both teams and one of the rare occasions in my first 20 years of supporting a Speedway Club where I got to cheer for the League Champions.

Was such a shame that in a Stadium like White City and with the already dwindling Speedway crowds it was a bit eery watching it. Wasn't so bad at Hackney as they got better crowds irrespective of the dross team Len Silver put out most seasons. But the racing was always good at Hackney with plenty of the Hackney riders becoming experts at coming from the back of the race. White City was as cloe as you could get to Polish tracks. Big.

Such happy days before we had social media - mobile phones - laptops etc - etc. How the hell did the sport survive with so many foreign top riders having to rely on a thing called a phone/landline. Didn't stop them turning up each meeting.

Unless of course you were the promised Anders Michanek who we used to look forward to seeing at Hackney but never materialised despite promises from Silver. What did we get instead - Finn Thomsen. What a joke and nowhere in the same class. But that was good old Len :-)

Oh happy days.

So the Championship play off dates have now been announced. If the promotion/relegation play off to follow does actually happen ( still not convinced) we are looking at early October for their meetings with the Lions. Have the Lions riders been told to make themselves available? Are potential guest riders being approached with regard to their availability to replace Lions riders that might be riding against them? (Don't laugh, this is speedway remember). Personally I do no think it matters what league we ride in next year (so long as we do actually compete) since the majority of riders racing will be the same names due to all the doubling up. Such is the lure of the Premiership that I do not think any Championship team is busting a gut to join the 'big' boys (I said stop laughing).

Further re-structuring of the leagues would seem a priority and if it is necessary to bring in weaker riders to reduce the number of double uppers, so be it. Teams with similar ability having riders who do not ride for other teams has to be the way forward. Fans will relate to a regular 1 to 7.

I just want to say I agree with your last sentence. If some of the better class NL riders are used it is possible to fill 18 teams with 7 different riders and have just the one league. The standard will obviously be lower but a clean start is the way to go.

As long as it goes ahead the provisional dates are away on Monday 3rd October and at home on Wednesday 5th October but this could all change.

If it does not happen it's a shame that no Thank You and goodbyes happened yesterday

I hate to burst that particular bubble but there is no Monday 3rd or Weds 5th October in this year's calendar!!

If you're talking the promotion/relegation meetings they are currently scheduled for Monday 9th and Wednesday 11th/Thursday 12th!!

You are very correct Skidder1 I got confused with something different, To be honest when I posted that last night I did think that's not leaving much time for the Championship final to take place as they only start with the semis this week.

Leicester have said that they want the second leg at home but as of Sunday there was still a lot to sort out and clarification of the rules

If it transpires to be Leicester v Sheffield and it's distinctly likely it's more of a case of who rides for who.

Of the four Championship teams in the play offs, only one team does not have rider/s that double up for the Lions. Does anyone know how rider priority works when a rider rides for both teams in the Premiership/Championship play off? Although this is a little embarrassing for the sport, it has to be addressed and I wouldn't be surprised if the powers that did not have something in place for such a scenario. The normal priorities for Premiership/Championship fixture clashes cannot surely be applied in such circumstances?

They'll probably arrange it for the doubling up riders to be in their championship team at home then riding for Leicester at Beaumont Park, with both teams trying desperately to lose. Or.........alternatively the relegation play-offs could just be quietly forgotten as a stupid idea in the first place because tracks have always decided which league they are financially more able to run in. We will know the answer soon.
