ruffdiamond
I have to agree with Terrace Grumbler, It's a farce when a side can import 3 riders who can go better on an away track than their own riders, that and R/R (for which you can also use said guests) makes a team unrecognisable from the one that should have been there. It's like Hartlepool FC having a second rate striker unavailable and being able to 'borrow' Lionel Messi for 1 game. Joke! totally agree that Sheffield's guests made them stronger, and fair play to them for booking them,,, on the other hand, Newcastle's choice of guest done the opposite r/r was available, and might have brought in more,,, thought this might happen tonight and totally dissappointed, Kyle Howarth was a match winning captain tonight and deserved it,,,

robbieblackadder fan club
had a sneaky feeling the make up of this team might come back to haunt us, however we should have had more than enough in the team we had to win, probably would have been better to go with R/R than Robson, maybe some of our riders have more than an eye on whats going on in the Elite League
mauger65
Congratulations to Sheffield..... I'm stunned we lost but the tigers did deserve it... they were much more up for it ... so well done to them As for their guests ... they performed well but nothing great ... the star was howarth... best I've ever seen him ride here and his paid 16 was the match winning performance It wasn't a hollow victory ... Sheffield had to use 3 guests cos the meeting was arranged on world 21s..... the only farce is crucial meetings are clashing with other meetings As for Newcastle we only HAVE ourselves to blame ... our poorest performance of the season .... reserves were blameless but 2 TO 5 HAD poor nights and as for Robson... well that was a poor choice 5 from 4 from number 1 was the main reason for failure I feel sorry for promoters in that they assembled a team to challenge for everything .... however our rider absences have proved crucial and very costly in all the competitions..... a serious look at the team make up for 2017 is crucial .... on paper we looked superb .... however they were rarely all together .... and lamberts absence tonight was the ultimate reason why our title hopes went up in smoke

Halifaxtiger
Okay, I'll play the curmudgeon( of no one else will come out and say some things that need to be said about tonight's meeting, I will do it. When Sheffield last visited Brough Park they stank the place out. Their team tonight bore no relation to that one and was not in any sense the Sheffield team. If you ever wonder why this sport is on its knees, look no further than nights like tonight. For Roy to say that this was like one of the great nights of Speedway in the past beggars belief - this was an artificial meeting which produced an artificial result. Right now my daughter is telling me that she doesn't want to come back because in Speedway, cheating is okay ( we are both season ticket holder is, as are my son and stepson). Perhaps some of the members of the "the riders are all heroes and can do no wrong" and "there is no alternative to guests" brigades would help me with convincing her to come with me next week. Go on, I'm listening. And if you had won, would your daughter be wanting to go back ? If the answer is yes, this is about the result not the make up of Sheffield's team (and, I daresay, the fact that you thought this was going to be a stroll in the park). You know, I know and everyone knows that Sheffield had to have 3 guests because they simply had no choice. Much more about losing than speedway's rules if you ask me. Terrace Grumbler
You're going to have to do better than this, HT... 1. Of course she would want to go back if Newcastle had won, because the pernicious effect of the rule book would not have prevailed: these issues are only in focus due to the result. 2. I no more thought that this would be a stroll in the park than (I dare say) you may go along to the PLRC thinking that a Sheffield rider is likely to win, thanks to home advantage and track preparation; however, as I have said, this has nothing to do with Sheffield in particular (including who is and who might or might not be on the injured list). 3. I'm not going to personalise this - if you want to think that I'm a bad loser and the rules of the sport will create a golden future, that's fine by me - but forgive me if I don't tell my girl that this was just a normal match and result and that trying to qualify for the playoffs may be pointless because once you have an all star team of track specialists will turn up and knock you out. screm
Most of us had Newcastle down as favourites for at least the final and maybe even potential winners so to see Sheffield getting through is a surprise, but isn't that just the play offs for you. romans lovechild
food for thought...........................if we didnt have the stupid play offs none of us would be reading this thread. then the bitter ones amongst us would be a lot happier.
KEITH M
The way Newcastle rode last night I think if Sheffield had of had Stead, Garrity, Berge and Bates in the side they would of been in semi final long before heat 15
lucifer sam
Just a quick question... but why wasn't this meeting staged on September 25, and avoided many of the guests. There was no rush to stage the Newcastle v Scunthorpe meeting the week before, which had already missed the cut-off date for the play-offs. It seems strange staging a Newcastle v Sheffield play-off meeting on the same night as a World U21 Round, given the make-up of the two teams. All the best Rob

All the best Rob Maybe the Newcastle Promotion decided that the Quarter Final against Sheffield was one that they could overcome Sheffield over two legs pretty easily. Or maybe having the Scunthorpe meeting later on in the season would mean the meeting would have no meaning at a later date and the crowd would be poor. ruffdiamond
Well, the milk is now cheese and we now only have the KOCup to look for,,, if we proceed and meet Glasgow in the final and lose, it'll be, 'we wouldn't have won the PL anyway', but if we do win it,,, well thats a different can of worms ,,, I hope last night is well reflected on as it was a winable tie, guests or not,,,
Tsunami
Well, the milk is now cheese and we now only have the KOCup to look for,,, if we proceed and meet Glasgow in the final and lose, it'll be, 'we wouldn't have won the PL anyway', but if we do win it,,, well thats a different can of worms ,,, I hope last night is well reflected on as it was a winable tie, guests or not,,, Quite right. Sheffield played the rules and signed 3 guests that knew our track very well. We all do it, or we are shortchanging the paying public. We obviously were going for RR for Lambert, as that was how it was programmed, but there must have been a change of heart and we signed Robbo, I would imagine as insurance incase one of the our big hitters got injured early in the meeting. As it is Robbo didn't perform that well with only a 5 point return. The track was OK but not the usual amount of grip as it had been dry all week. Our track is so much better when it has rained heavy before raceday but it didn't. The reason IMO that we lost was, not because we were complacent, but our riders did not ride to their usual standard, but Kyle Howarth and their guests did and more. Only two riders who could be completely satisfied would be Ashley and Danny, the rest were below par on a night when they need to be that little bit better. Let's be honest, the likes of Victor has been poor lately, and that's the way he started last night. Matej and Ludde are the engine room and can be expected to get 5-1on a regularly basis but they didn't last night, and lastly Steve had two poor rides when he could have been expected to be better. Like everyone having a pop both from Newcastle and other teams, we should have walked this one, even with their guests, but we didn't and now we need to concentrate on salvaging the situation and win the KOCup. Dissappointed as I am, Newcastle Diamonds have had a cracking year and put us back among the main contenders again, slowly moving up the league with meetings in hand, and getting some great wins and performances both at home and away. The PO's are gone as they are for some other teams, but at least we have had a great season, and still have to KOCup to look forward to. The PO's are Glasgow's to lose now. Bring it on. montie
Newcastle have probably used more guests this year than anyone due to the make up of there time, and many times picked track specialist as guests Even with the Tigers bringing in guests did anyone give Sheff i hope in hell around Brough Park? Newcastle over two legs were alway gonna take some beating what ever guests or team showed up---100% full credit to Sheff for doing that And do be fair, the rider that really won it for Sheff was Howarth, one of their own riders
pablo133
poor performance by most of the diamonds except morris, even our top 4 looked under par. good guests for tigers and poor one for ncstle, track was poor with no water, dusty and little passing, and ncstle were poor out of the gate in most races, few points of note - robson for lambert - poor choice you cant replace a a 9 pointer with a 6/7 pointer this has happened a few times away also where kerr and bates guested to replace worrall and lambert , before i get told lack of guests etc, why arrange match on certain dates where this is the case, cutoff deadline a joke by the bspa - there should be some flexibility allowed when this happens , why not extend it by 2 weeks?? did George think robo would be ok to guest a we would cover his lack of points - big mistake why didnt we water the track and rip it up mid meeting to try and knock sheffield out of their stride?? its a shame as losing by just 6 points away we done the hard work and the 2nd leg should have been a formality if we managed the guest situation better imo.
