Sheffield 2017

Recommended Posts

So Josh finishes 2015 riding mostly at reserve and ups his average. Starts 2016 riding at 2, 4 and 3 and his average only drops by 0.24.

Yes we have had a difference of opinion before as I think you don't see the bigger picture.

Do you support Coventry or Sheffield?:lol:

The clues in the thread Title and the word "us" 🙊😮

Was a joke, because he has progressed for Coventry, but not for Sheffield

Very pleased to see Kyle back, there was a point when I wondered whether or not that Workington might try and lure him back.

On the subject of Josh Bates, he did have an in different season last season for Sheffield, but he started to show what he can do towards the end of the season and I think that the starting average in my opinion attractive proposition for the team and I would welcome him back with open arms.

I just think for his own benefit he could do with being away from the pressure he must have riding at Sheffield

He showed this with how he rode for Coventry and some good scores in his guest bookings, however I agree that on his average it wouldn't be a problem having him back.

I saw Bates twice at Glasgow,,,

Riding for Sheffield he looked completely out of his depth

Guesting for Somerset he rode out of his skin and gave Somerset the result they needed

That is the problem inconsistency

As I said is this something to do with the pressure he is under riding for family at Sheffield?

A bit incomparable to be honest as for Coventry he was a protected EDR in a different race format. He did progress though I will give you that.

If I had to describe Josh Bates in a word, I'd struggle between nutjob (in a nice way) and inconsistent. You could see him struggle to beat draft riders one week and then beat Jason Doyle in heat 15 the week after. But for me, a rider who DOES beat Jason Doyle clearly has "it" and it's about getting consistency out of him. A 5 point man who only ever beat sub 5 point men but never beats 6 point men is at his level. Joshs temperament can sometimes aid him, other times its a massive handicap but he has years to learn to handle it. I don't know about for Sheffield but I know he pulled some great rides out of the bag for the Bees when we needed him to and the chips were down, that's not a number 7s job but he still did it!

His scores also seem to get better as a meeting progresses, he seems to thrive on a slicker track. Something that was nice when you had King, Garrity and Harris in the team who tend to do the opposite if anything.

I think last year for Sheffield was more a year of consolidation, he moved up into the 1-5 so while his average dropped a little, he didn't have the easier reserve rides. While for Coventry he did pick up his EL form and did move into the 1-5 for a spell. Not a massive season for him but far from a bad one. If Sheffield and Coventry don't have him back I expect plenty of other clubs will take him without a moments hessitation!

To be fair anyone that has the bottle to throw a 500cc bike around with no brakes is a "nut job" to most people - that being said though personally id like to have Josh Bates back with us in 2017, i believe he is better than his average, thats just my humble opinion though .

The EL averages bear that out. Josh got 4.76 this year & on a 1.4 converter would be 6.66 but he can be had on his PL average of 5.02! Great value, young & determined.

I think that you are pretty spot on with what you are saying.

He is far from the finished article, and with the average that he is on I can only see him make some improvements, if he can iron out the over riding he culd put some serious improvement on his average.

Like most decent rider's Bates is great when he gates, and last season you needed to gate at Owlerton. When he does not gate he tries all he can to catch the other riders, but throwing the bike all over the place and not riding the right lines makes him look a bit out of control at times He is only a young guy and he will learn. I see him speaking to Steady a lot in the pit's so if he takes notice of Steady he won't go far wrong. So i hope we sign him for this season, he could be a steal on a 5.02 average. UTT

I don't really rate the lad because of his inconsistency, but he always seems to get on the rostrum for meetings like U19 and U21. Strange.

Not just rostrum he is good at winning as well.

If you read his comments after all of his British Championship wins you would have heard him say thank you for the advice from certain people.

2014 British Under 21 title winner at Wolverhampton limited experience of the track listened and took the advice from Ty Proctor.

2015 British Under 19 title winner at Berwick struggle badly when riding at Berwick previously listen and took the advice of Simon Stead and storm to victory unbeaten.

2016 British Under 21 title winner at Sheffield Robert Lambert head and shoulders and looking like he was going to walk the final, Josh again enlists the advice of Simon Stead, and when it counts out guns Robert Lambert.

Not only does he seek out for the best possible advice, he listens and can actually put into practice what he has been advised to do, not many youngsters can do that .
