*JJ
Both Smudger and Foxy if I recall, perhaps Smudger was in the early years. Assume it was because he looked like the beano character of that name. 'Smudger' is a traditional nickname for anyone named Smith, like 'Nobby' Clarke. gee jay
Good thread My favourite was 'Little Bo Peep' for Bo Petersen. Never knew why Andy Smith was called Smudger. Hearing a race with Wiggy and Donkey riding for England sounded daft but amusing. Also loved 'Sprouts'. *JJ
Nobby wasn't named Smith though, was he? No, they are named Clarke Porky dubbed Lewis Blackbird the Beast from the East. Great story for his time with the Heathens - from zero to hero! Porky didn't invent this nickname; it was the moniker of a 7 foot tall Russian boxer, now (I haven't invented this) a politician.
Wackie
Malcom 'Mad Wellie' Holloway Wellie's nickname came from his time at Milton Keynes where he would turn up in his work gear straight from his day job, which included wellies! Dave Goddard
Emil "Dave the Russian" Sajfutdinov. This one came about from some friends of mine who were at Cardiff the first year Emil rode there and they could not agree on how to say his name. After some arguing one of them said to the others "Oh forget it, I'm gonna call him Dave!" and the name has stuck among them ever since... *JJ
There was Zdenek Kudrna. Nobody could pronounce (or spell!) his name, so he was just called 'Zed'. Or, by some, 'Kermit' because of his green leathers.

Shadders
Craig Saul, the Rye House announcer, calls Ben Morley, "The Shrimpster", referring to his home town, Southend-on-Sea, who's football team are known as the Shrimpers. It could also be a reference to his small stature when he first started racing for the Raiders. As far as I know nobody else uses the nickname, only Craig I think there was a guy named Jamie Habbin, who rode in pink leathers for Peterborough in the early 90's and was known as the Pink Panther. What about team nicknames ..Liverpool Chads?Or Yarmouth Bloaters Tyburn GallowsI recall reading somewhere that he used that as a nickname, but the speedway authorities banned him from using, so he changed his name by deed poll to Tyburn Gallows. Don't remember his real name, Ray something. Edited September 21, 2016 by Shads

Tigerblade
I'm probably displaying major ignorance here, but why was Emiliano Sanchez nicknamed Poty? A bloke who sits along from me at Owlerton has nicknamed Dimitri Berge "Fab" (Fab-Berge... ). Not a nickname as such, but I always get an earworm of the song "Tom Dooley" whenever I see Dan Bewley race....
