Berwick 2017 50th Year

Recommended Posts

Some of Carr`s scores towards the end of last season were excellent but it should be remembered he had six or seven races some nights, and some of those races were against opposition reserve riders. Racing in the No2 race jacket he can only have a maximum of five rides, most of which will be against opposition heat leaders.

In Berwicks case, when selecting riders, simply due to being a new promotion with financial limitations, they ought to be looking at using it's asset base as much as possible. The team above has 1 asset rider.

Sorry "assets"?

The asset base of the club isn’t that good and the best rider and asset doesn’t seem overly willing to ride for a Saturday track (Bellego) the next best asset (Alden) has been seriously injured and doesn’t live in this country so how “cost effective” is he as an addition?

Putting together a weaker team for the sake of assets purely to use assets seems a strategy that is just as likely to stretch financial limitations (medium/long term i.e when racing actual meetings) as a side with competitive riders who would likely outperform said side of assets – which would likely have 2 or at best 3 “assets” anyway - so swap the 2 point rider out for a Berwick youngster and you meet a comparable quota.

It also appears that most clubs have accepted the idea that assets are dead and there is a level of gentleman’s agreement (Brian Havelock apart) with regards to where riders race each season – and generally riders show a level of commitment and performance that doesn’t live up to repute of a “loanee” eg Jorgensen or Doolan who have been as “Berwick” as any rider over the last few years with their performance level, professionalism and commitment.

The one minor plus the “asset” system has going for it is the idea of selling on a progressive rider to another club for a fee, that system also appears to be completely broken based on reputation, thus one wonders what financial savings/benefit their actually is to “assets” or the utilisation of them, a lesson most clubs appear to have learned – purely because the idea is good, the execution of the system is horrible.

The only advantage to building up an asset base is that you can command a loan fee should you decide to loan out one of your assets to another team. Very few full transfers these days as the majority of clubs just cannot afford them.

Correct, but you have to pay a loan fee, and in the above case, there are 6 loan fees, and in most cases a signing on fee.

In Garritys case there is a damn good reason Sheffield have off loaded him.

4.00 is the Match Average allocated to "new" foreign riders next season.

5.00 will be the Match Average allocated to "existing" foreign riders who did not attain an average above 5.00 in 2016, so Gappmaer would be allocated a commencing Match Average of 5.00 for 2017 - as would Riders like Paco Castagna, Mason Campton and Mark Riss.

Where have you found/seen this?

According to twitter SpeedwayGB

"SpeedwayGB @SpeedwayGB Nov 7

UPDATE | The minimum average for foreign riders is now 4.

I'd rather see Berwick move on and try a new rider like Garrity or someone similar at Shielfield than see Kus or Bellego back and I wouldn't be keen on taking Gappmaer on a five either, he tailed off after a good start for me and looked slower each week. What about Josh Bates on a 5.02?

Not the wisest move IMO opinion to have Bates and Garrity in the same team, agree with you on Gappmaier, on his night he looked a real talent that should be able to hold his average, however on other night he was tailed off at the rear in some races..
