Trevor
I like the Play Off system. I like the drama, and the climactic way the season ends, to decide the Elite league Champions. However shouldn't the team finishing top of the league be presented with a league winners shield for their trophy cabinet as reward for finishing top? I know in Rugby League, Leigh were presented with a shield even though the Play Offs were what the main prize is. It does seem fitting.

Steve Shovlar
No there should be nothing. The prize they have won is first pick. Nothing else. What is it with some clubs? Desperate for some form of trophy in case they blow it in the playoffs.
stevebrum
Yet another thread on the same thing. No one wins nothing by finishing top of the league, other than the right to pick their opponent.

Bagpuss
Works for Superleague so why not speedway? Think it's a good idea personally, just a good bit of recognition for being the best team over 28 'qualifying' meetings and nothing more.
Woz01
Funny how no one suggests it when Poole finish top! lol You joking? This thread pops up every year. I believe there should be a shield presented, it works in Rugby League
Trees
The fans will have to cough up if we think there should be one perhaps, these shields don't cost that much unless someone arty and good at welding can come up with something else .......
marko
This comes up every season and every season I say the same thing, the rules are the rules but there is nothing, NOTHING to say that the fans of any particular club can't club together and present their club with a custom made trophy honouring the achievement of finishing the season top of qualification process, thus far NOT one clubs set of fans have met this challenge, of course it won't be recognised by the bspa or scb as a legitimate title but like I say, if fans want to honour their side there is nothing to stop you, it's not that much different to those patrons who invest their own money into awarding rider of the month awards at various tracks, and you can do it now, you don't have to wait until the outcome of the play offs, if fact if you did wait it and lost the play offs it will look like sour grapes. sparkafag
Even as a fan I would find that a bit cheap if the side I support didn’t end the season as Champions, would probably be the medal riders let collect dust as well. Steve Shovlar
Why don't we call the team top of the league Elite League Champions and the team that wins the play offs Elite League Play off champions? Because the team who finish top are not EL Champions, and by calling them so would devalue the league title and devalue the playoffs. Only the winner of the playoffs are called league champions. Why is it every club except Poole bleat on about this every year? Don't recall a single Poole fan bring this up when we finish top.
Bagpuss
Except it's not bleating, it's a sensible suggestion which other sports use to their benefit.
Steve Shovlar
Surely it would make more sense to devalue the competition with 6 meetings rather than the competition with 112 meetings? But the six meetings are still part of the 112, not a separate competition.
BWitcher
They are in addition to the 112 qualifiers which by definition means they are part of the same competition. The issue is some fans are blinded by the biggish play off crowds and ignore the qualifiers. Lots of problems which weren't initially that obvious are only revealed when you break something down into it's component parts and even then some people just stick there fingers in their ears and go "la la la I can't here you". C'est la vie. "Some people" being the promoters of every league in England.. the promoters in Sweden... the promoters in Denmark.. the promoters in Poland.. you see a pattern? Fans don't make decisions, promoters do. They're in it to make money and quite obviously believe that overall the playoffs bring in more.

BWitcher
Why do you keep mentioning Sweden? Crowds were already going up before they changed to the qualifier and knockout cup bit format? Read the post, it's quite clearly explained. Grachan
I'll price up a shield and let's see if the supporters can make this one happen?? There is a shield already. The Craven Shield. Give them that if it actually exists. Plus everyone already knows that it comes second to the championship
lucifer sam
There is a shield already. The Craven Shield. Give them that if it actually exists. Plus everyone already knows that it comes second to the championship I suggested that a few years ago in a letter that was printed in the Speedway Star. It's common sense. There was a shield - it must be somewhere. Hand it over to the league table toppers. They get something for finishing top. And one of the great riders of British Speedway is acknowledged. Would have been particularly nice this year, with Belle Vue winning it. On Sky too. That's the minor title. And then the teams go for the major title in the play-offs. All the best Rob
