Do Speedway Promoters Ever Come On Here?

Recommended Posts

I know it seems an strange question but do we know if any of the people who promote our sport come into this forum and read what people are saying?

From time to time, the good people on this forum make some good and constructive comments and observations about both the clubs that they support and the sport as a whole.

Looking at how some of the promoters go about their business, it makes you wonder if they pay any attention at all to what their customers (us) might be saying and thinking. I am not aware that clubs are in the habit of carrying out any kind of customer satisfaction surveys, so you would think that they would pop their head in here from time to time just to get a feel for how it is all going.

I cannot believe that promoters of any sport would have such an unshakable belief in their own abilities that they would plough on regardless and pay no heed whatsoever to how the product that they were providing was being received by the paying customer.

Whilst, it would be unreasonable to expect promoters to get involved in some of the passionate debates that take place in this hallowed arena, it would be nice to know that at least somebody was listening and possibly even learning.

Just my opinion, obviously.

Steve Purchase (one time Oxford promoter) used to access the old Oxford Speedway Forum and participate in discussion. In fact he invited me to a pre-season meeting on the one occasion based on my involvement on said forum.

Steve, did he give you a sound thrashing with a rolled up copy of the season preview speedwaystar

Steve Purchase was a breath of fresh air as a promoter, always available for a chat as he used to walk amongst the crowd during meetings.

I once thought Steve as the businessman and the much maligned on here, Waggy as the man in charge of publicity and presentation couldve been a good pairing

the only problem is there is so much cr&p on here that they would have to sift through a lot to read something half decent.

the only thing i know from being part of a promotion long ago and being on here is that opinions are like ar$eholes.. everyone has one..

I for one am glad they dont come on here because if they did most of them would quit and then we wouldnt have any speedway as some cr&p that is on here is irrelevant and most of all because people dont know the inner workings like cash flow.. riders wages.. rent etc etc etc.. they are giving opinions that wouldnt be possible..

I think every team should have a fans forum i know Peterborough did and I also know back when i was involved with Plymouth they did and any questions were openly and honestly answered (well maybe not plymouth as it was mike bowden and i dont think he knows what the word honest means).. not sure if every team does one..

but i certainly wouldnt want them or riders on here.. it can be a very unpleasant place to be.

I was sat in pub with a speedway promoter once, just chatting away. He said that he regularly posted on here, but in a way that nobody would guess it was him.

He also told me of others who posted on here too in the same manner.

This was a few years ago, though, when people tended to post about speedway rather than just insult each other or try to guess which posters are the same people using different names, so they probably gave up bothering a long time ago.

Neil Watson of Coventry comes on here and I've seen him answer queries that are asked in a polite manner :approve:

I sometimes wonder why he bothers as 9 times out of 10 questions aren't asked in a polite manner but just negative abuse to the promoters. Against the forum rules but it seems anything goes on here these days.

I can't remember if Peter Toogood used to post but he certainly used to mingle with the fans on the terraces at Swindon when he was promoter there. Of the present day ones David Hemsley does quite a bit of mingling at Leicester but in restricted areas at the moment.

If you were a promotor, would you come on here?

There is so much squabbling, back-stabbing, anger, pettiness, rudeness, that you would have to trawel through to get to the possibly useful info, then I perhaps wouldn't bother...

i certainly wouldnt... i got so much stick when i was involved with Plymouth i stopped using it.. now i enjoy some banter but still some of the opinions on here are pretty harsh sometimes.

Most replies thus far are justification as to why they wouldn’t bother with it…

Also often forgot just how small time a forum is, if you join a forum and post on it you always tend to lead yourself to think you are changing the world, in reality there is barely any one posts on this forum - about 10/15/20 at most from each track....

Of course many of them are lurking on here and have been for years. That's how they know what people are talking about when they complain about the Internet trolls in the pages of the Spar.

I do hope though that in addition to dismissing trolls they do take on board some of the constructive criticism about our sport. easy to dismiss the forum as moaning fans, but most on here are also customers.

Most of them get their Lackey's to do it for them.

Or they bring in 'guest' Lackey's if their Lackey's are unavailable due to being on another forum somewhere else!!!

More rubbish from someone not in a position to know. But thinks he does. As Fromafar has said, if there was something relevant and of value or concern, someone would bring it to their attention. Promoters are busy people, usually with work or a company to look after, and wouldn't waste their time on following, or reading, the conflicting views and bias that abounds on this forum. Does anybody really think that the views generally on here reflect the true views of the average supporters who DO attend the meetings. It's not as if everyone spouts the same things and with a consensus that is feasible. Instead people condemn everything, and either push for modernisation of the sport, or want to go back to where we have come from. If it was your business or money, would YOU want to put the effort into following such conflicting opinions. Forum critics don't normally make good promoters, as proved from some of the threads that are current on here.

Jonathan Chapman as King's Lynn promoter use to post regularly.

Problem with some posters is they have no debating skills and go on the attack over nothingness.

They could say the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth and be shot down in an instant.

It is a shame though that they don't post, would love to hear their opinion on some of the subjects
